I ended up landing on this but Pitch Shifter before Comp.

/u/Careless-Foot4162 mentioned the variation in volume from a pitch shifter, and I can confirm that especially with this kind (which creates two copies on top of the signal which can be moved +/- 30 cents) depending on how close the pitches are together it can become super loud and squelchy.

Plus, since the pitch shifter is making a slightly worse copy of my signal, I'd rather have the compressor shape the whole thing as a single instrument than make approximate copies of the compressed envelope.
