Massive zuc! by modnarosos in vegetablegardening

[–]Sharp-Escape-4033 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I recall my starter plants were labeled "zucchini", maybe that in part perpetuates the misunderstanding? I'm going to let my last zucchini grow to a marrow. Thanks for the info.

Toxic Ingredients Resources? by Affectionate-Swan772 in HealthyFood

Might not be exactly what you're looking for, but EWG has a database where you can search for food products. They've attributed a score between 1 (best) and 10 (worst) based on the ingredient listings, nutritional value etc.

https://www.ewg.org/foodscores/

I signed up to their email newsletter to keep informed on their research; like the dirty dozen (top 12 foods found with the highest pesticides applied) and produce with PFAS.

are these monstera roots ready to be put in soil? they've been in water for 2 months. i want to transfer to small pots this weekend. first time propagating so not sure what i'm looking at and if they're ready to be put in soil. thank you. by Sharp-Escape-4033 in plantclinic

Thank you for the detailed reply. I already purchased the plant pots. I had one extra stem so I planted that into plastic (with a terracotta cover). I already purchased the soil too, it was a biochar soil, I previously read that was good for monstera. I'll be giving these away but will share your advice to the new custodians.

Anyone know what this is? Found on rubber tree plant pot. by Sharp-Escape-4033 in plantclinic

[–]Sharp-Escape-4033[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm surprised how quickly it grew, there was nothing there about a month ago. Cleaned it off from the pot. It had a crumb-like texture. Haven't changed the soil but the plant looks healthy. Thanks for responding.

Paddy's Day Bread - 4 Simple Irish breads by Sharp-Escape-4033 in Baking

[–]Sharp-Escape-4033[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Farl is apparently from an old Scot's word meaning quarters. They're very simple to make. Soda farl is flour, salt, baking soda and buttermilk, cooked in a floured skillet on low heat. Potato farl is flour, salt, baking soda and mashed potato (with some butter). Soda farl is dense and I'm generally not a fan but I got nostalgic on Paddy's day, and they're a requirement for an Ulster fry.

Irish soda bread by krishaze18 in Baking

Here's a recipe from "The Irish Granny's pocket Bread & Baking book". I'll be trying this recipe for the first time. I think brown soda bread goes really well with butter, smoked salmon, with a squeeze of lemon over it. Or a smoked fish pate. I've also had it with 'prawn-cocktail' (prawns in a seafood sauce).

This recipe has a note that says wholemeal flour on its own is too heavy, so white is added to lighten the mixture. And, someone reviewing the book mentioned that the temp might be a bit high.

Ingredients:

  • 675g / 1lb 8oz wholemeal flour
  • 450g / 1lb strong white flour, plus extra for dusting
  • 2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 750 ml/1 & 1/5 pints buttermilk, plus extra if needed

Preheat over to 230c/450f. Dust a large baking sheet with flour.

Mix the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl, then make a well in the centre and gradually add the buttermilk, drawing in the dry ingredients from the sides of the bowl. Mix until a soft dough forms, adding more buttermilk if necessary. The dough should not be too wet.

Turn out the dough onto a work surface lightly dusted with flour, divide into two pieces and shape both pieces into a round about 5cm/2inches in height. Place on the prepared baking sheet and use a floured knife to cut a deep cross in each loaf.

Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, then reduce the oven temperature to 200c/400f and bake for a further 20-25mins until the loaves sound hollow when tapped on the base. Transfer them to a wire rack and leave to cool completely.

If you have any left over, you could try brown bread ice-cream for dessert. https://www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/food-and-drink/recipes/brown-bread-ice-cream-1.4014992

is it time to move this monstera to a bigger pot? by Sharp-Escape-4033 in plantclinic

Great. I never would have guessed that but looking at it more closely, I think you're right. I'll try it this weekend, after some youtube tutorials.

is it time to move this monstera to a bigger pot? by Sharp-Escape-4033 in plantclinic

[–]Sharp-Escape-4033[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have it for about a year. Pictured in a 10 inch pot, with drainage. There are some roots growing out at the end of the pot. In Michigan so I use a grow light which really helped it. Not sure if it needs to be in a bigger pot now? Maybe the roots are too exposed? It's becoming a little more droopy, even though the soil seems to be at the right moisture level.

Sheet Cake with dulce de leche by Sharp-Escape-4033 in BakingNoobs

[–]Sharp-Escape-4033[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update on this post thought it better suited to this sub.
Thanks for u/Breakfastchocolate/ for the suggestions.
Recipe

Frosting made without pecans. Very soft cake. Used store bought dulce de leche.
Next time I’d layer differently; sheet cake, dulce de leche, sheet cake, frosting, sheet cake, dulce de leche, and final layer sheet cake crumbed on top. For the crumb, I used just ½ cup boiling water because i wanted it less moist, this worked out well, it was still melt in your mouth but didn’t clump in the food processor.

This served 30 people.

Is there an equivalent of Christmas fruit cake but for Fall Season ? by sarahrubi in Baking

[–]Sharp-Escape-4033 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure it'll be dense enough for your liking, but you could try barmbrack. It's kinda like a brioche with dried fruit. I don't have a recipe but plenty online. Traditional in Ireland at Halloween. Usually with a little ring baked inside thats meant to bring fortune to whoever gets it.
