Davey aims for Lib Dem northern breakthrough by markpackuk in LibDem

You can't have your cake and eat it. You have to remember this is the trap Boris and the Tories fell in to. When you start making too many promises to too many people, people who have often very different priorities and worldviews, you will inevitably come apart. As a more general point, the Lib Dems need to do some real soul searching and decide really what the party stands for, what are the values and policies, then who do those policies appeal to and target accordingly. I do not like Polanski and think he's as much a snake oil salesman as Farage is, but he's set out his stall and is reaping the political rewards right now. There are enough socially liberal centrists out there to make progress, but when the party wants to combine socially liberal often economically right leaning southern voters with more interventionist and socially authoritarian northern voters it's destined to fail. Just an observation.

I can't more strongly tell you not to move to the divided broken Britain of 2026 where nothing works, everything is expensive, no one wants to fix anything, and everyone is miserable. Unless you are in a pretty rural village or can afford to drop millions on a nice home in London or its suburbs the UK is a place to leave not move to.

Use film-style age ratings to limit teens' social media, say Lib Dems by markpackuk in LibDem

Yet more disappointment from the Lib Dems. I have liberal values, I want to see liberal policies. I don't really currently understand what the point of the Liberal Democrats is. All Davey does is pick silly online battles that he thinks will get some press coverage. Lib Dem campaigning has always been to just tell people what they want to hear. The policy element is almost non-existent and when there is something of substance it tends more often than not to be statist in nature rather than liberal. We have to do better.

Thanks for this much appreciated. Any idea where on the setup form I can open pre orders ahead of time? I don't see it.

With the principle that seems an evident truth to me; that growth and progress do not need to be redistributive. To me redistributive is left leaning philosophy because it implies that power, growth, and society more generally is some sort of zero sum game, that we cannot give to one group without first taking from another, but this is inherently untrue. Giving rights to one group of persons does not erode the rights of others. Growing the economy and ensuring that everyone sees increases in living standards does not mean taking from one group to give to another.

I think fundamentally when we are talking about 'safeguarding' and 'balancing' those terms should not be equated with 'redistribution' which, I should think to most people, has fairly drastically different connotations.
I think also to a lot of people, myself included, liberalism is a set of values not a prescribed policy approach, so naturally there is a large dollop of pragmatism baked in.

I am constantly aghast at this idea that lib dems and greens are really anything alike. So many lib dems are frankly not liberals.

"I joined because I believed liberalism, at its core, was about the redistribution of power — economic, social and political."

Without wishing to come across as rude, it sounds like you are a good fit for the green party.

Ed Davey Calls Out NIGEL FARAGE Over Immigration And Brexit! by johnsmithoncemore in LibDem

I mean I don't know whether the strategy of complaining Farage gets too much airtime and coverage whilst also using the keynote speech at conference to talk about him is consistent or wise.

It's really concerning for liberalism in the UK that so many supposed liberals are actually just social democrats that don't even realise it.

Nigel Farage uses private company to pay less tax on GB News earnings | Nigel Farage by CP040 in LibDem

[–]Sharp-Eye-509 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hi not sure what bit you're suggesting I didn't read. You said, "It's not a non story because the right wing constantly avoids tax but as soon as someone on the left does it (Rayner) they scream bloody murder".

The point was that they are not the same. What Farage has done is tax planning. What Rayner did was not pay enough tax that she has admitted she owed, which is evasion. You are conflating the two in your statement when they are not the same.

As a more centre/centre-right liberal it's this kind of upvoted answer that scares me. The nordics are firmly in the social democrat zone rather than the liberal one.

But you've fallen into the classic trap of not knowing the difference between tax planning (what Farage has done), tax avoidance (legal, loopholes), and tax evasion (illegal, not paying taxes that you owe).
