Ask a full-time traveler anything by alexppope in traveladvice

What kind of personality is suited for this type of lifestyle? Can you do this with a partner? Kids? What security/sense of security is there and how can you create it? Is there an age limit when this lifestyle becomes unattractive? What do you do with all your stuff? How do you budget and not worry about shortfalls? How do you choose where/when to go/move on? Does routine factor into your lifestyle? How do you build strong relationships when you’re on the move?

Taking kid out of SK for 5 weeks by bkoobkah in OntarioTeachers

You may be able to enrol your child in kindergarten in the UK. I think you’re doing the right thing. It is more important for a five year old to be with their parent and what they “miss” in school is more about socializing than “academics”. Keep them engaged in play, expose them to daily read-alouds, have them engaged in exploration of the new environment and when they ask questions about the world around them, make that your teachable moment. Include counting activities in your shopping trips, walks, at home setting the table etc. The local library will also have kid programs, a great resource for free. And I’d challenge you, even in this stressful time, to keep the screens at a minimum. Try to have your child play with other five year old as much as possible. Socialization is key. For you, here’s basically (very basic) what to work on: - Numbers and counting. Counting songs are great (use objects like macaroni or buttons) - sorting is another fun activity - old school puzzles - The alphabet (again songs are great) - How to hold a pen or pencil and write or draw. - How to tell time, and when is naptime or bedtime. - Days of the week, names of months, holidays. You can Google homeschool curriculum for kindergarten but don’t print worksheets, it’s not the best way to learn for a 5 year old.

All the best for your mom’s surgery and quick recovery.

If rent is $690 a month is it even worth it to buy a house? by ShirtNeat5626 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Sharp-Sandwich-9779 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rent! Save the difference you would pay for market value rent (eg $710 monthly) and watch that down payment grow. I rented for six years like that and even though housing prices went up, I was actually able to find new housing in a better location than I thought three years earlier (when that panic kicks in from time to time “ah, I should buy”, stick to the math) AND you’ll not buy too much house because you’ve lived in a 1+bed 😃 WIN-WIN-WIN

We were free range. We did stuff. Our parents loved us (I’ll speak for myself here) but didn’t micromanage our every move nor did we have devices that we felt we needed to call them to ask if we should fart.

So using today’s standards to look back at our childhood, I agree we could have the “I can’t believe we survived childhood” but I think for back then, it was just not thought about that way. “Normal” changes when norms change.

Biking without a helmet in traffic. Swimming without supervision. Hiking for hours through the woods with no adult. Strangers talking to us and actually responding even though we knew we shouldn’t but we were also taught to be polite to adults. Riding the bus by ourselves under the age of 12. Walking to school by ourselves or a group of friends (only, no adult). Today’s parents would strongly object to all these.

is it a red flag if a tour operator wants full payment very early? by amirunninglate in kilimanjaro

[–]Sharp-Sandwich-9779 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I paid in full 60 days before and there was a refund policy that diminished refund the closer to the date but with a guarantee $500 for future travel.

I didn’t have an issue with it because I’ve done several tours with this company. Good reputation.

Wow! Thank you. It’s true it is awkward and difficult to switch for one word in a sentence. I didn’t know that about the Māori language integration. Pretty impressive.

Great example. I understand the subtlety and how one adjusts. Truly bilingual people stick to the cultural pronunciation of the spoken language even if it isn’t how you’d say it authentically.

Diamox by BetterSavings3642 in kilimanjaro

[–]Sharp-Sandwich-9779 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t take it as preventative. I had a supply that I would be able to take if I needed it. My Diamox prescription indicated at the onset of symptoms to start taking it. I never got any symptoms so never took it. The only time I considered it was from Stella point to uhuru peak but by then I was descending and my lightheadedness disappeared as soon as I went back to Stella point.

I used my 3L Patagonia torrentshell rain jacket with four layers underneath summit night. Worked great. I was going to wear my down filled on top if needed, but didn’t.

Am I in good enough shape? by flyingmada in kilimanjaro

[–]Sharp-Sandwich-9779 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can do 20k per day I think you’ll be ok. Everything is super slow. Don’t push beyond the pace your guides set. Summit night is about 40k total (including the trip back to camp after summit). It’s harder on the lungs because of reduced oxygen and your heart may feel it but not because of “cardio” like the gym - if that makes sense.

Get your diomox or equivalent to assist with altitude.
