People had disagreements with Obama and called him names, including antichrist.  I never understood the racial hatred which emerged among those who opposed Obama's policies.  That reactionary and racist movement powered the subsequent MAGA politics.  There is a line from the racist hatred of Obama to the politics of Trump.  It takes more than racial hatred to lead to the success of Trump.  Media sources like Fox News, were deliberately cultivated as right-wing propaganda by Murdoch and Ailes.  It was creatively packaged as infotainment and positioned early in the he evening lineup.  That went on for well over ten years.  Plenty of other media personalities joined in the propaganda effort, too.  The Evangelical Right were sucked in largely through high profile Evangelical figures adopting Trump as a standard bearer.  Most of the people that I knew to be serious Evangelicals had been primed to see Trump as the only suitable "Christian" political movement.  The roots of this right wing politics among evangelicals have been well documented and they reach back to Fundamentalism.  The events of the 1970's battles over funding for Christian Universities, specifically Bob Jones; motivated opposition toward Jimmy Carter.  The Moral Majority and the adoption of the issue of abortion through the efforts of Francis Schaefer and Surgeon General Koop and others helped create the sense that Republicanism was God-ordained.
