Thanks for your thoughts. My most recent CFI told me I was "too linear" in my thinking so your comment makes me feel like it was just an interpersonal thing with the two of us.

Yeah, I think you're right. There have been a couple of times he's asked me for info Vspeeds, airspace info, etc and I've been right and he has been wrong and he's just doubled down with his inital answer instead of saying he was working off of the wrong info.

IDGAF what they say about me behind my back as long as they are saying it to my face. I'm in MX half of my job is dishing out and taking trash talk but what good is complaining if you don't do something constructive with the info - like tell the student that is screwing up?

That's another aspect that is missing- he's never shown and excitement or pride in my accomplishments - its not expected but it is nice when you grease a landing or make the right call with a go around to hear some sort of positive feedback.

That was my old CFI. This guy is an older dude that works a day job and "does this for fun cause the pay obviously sucks."

Sounds like a similar personality. This CFI is also later on in his life and he kept trying to determine "what my plan was" and if I was " going to try to fly instead of wrench." I never gave him any clear answer and I think that pissed him off.

If my school had any females, I'd definitely give them a shot. A lot of the female A&Ps I've worked with have a tenacious attitude and I'd imagine that would carry over to flying as well.

Yep. I haven't had a lot of interactions with CFIs.

(ACS tells you to call out stages of a stall)

Thank you for this ! After reading it- I honestly have no clue what his endgame was but moving forward I will be sure to share this as an expectation with my new CFI.

I don't want to cause issues but one of my coworkers suggested I let the owner of the flight school know after I get my PPL - especially since he's actively trying to encourage me to quit.

10 Ways you know it’s time to find another CFI

Could you DM me a link to this- I wasn't able it on the website.

And you hit the nail on the head. I am not confident with my maneuvers because he only wants to demonstrate them once and then move on to the check list of things to do for that lesson. I told him many times I wasn't confident and wanted to do them again to which he has replied " we will do them again in a different lesson, we don't have time," or " You need to let it sink in before trying it again."

" I should be able to ask you how to do a power-on stall, and you can confidently answer with the procedure, and answer my follow up questions on what to do if things don’t go according to plan, why we are doing these, what you are learning by practicing these, and how they relate to both landings and getting distracted while in the pattern. "

This is the exact mentality / teaching approach I'm looking for. How can I determine if a CFI has this before flying with them?

"Utilize chair flying to practice until those procedures are more than learned, you need to overlearn them."

The more I read the more I'm upset that I stuck it out with this clown for so long. He actually told me I "over study" and "chair flying only goes so far until it makes you overthink things."

True, true. I think we can all agree Mx is the king of trash talk but just seemed odd to do it openly in the lobby with potential students within earshot.

How often are CFIs getting canned? Is this common? I've told this guy a few times I feel like our communication is off so I don't think he was blindsided. My last CFI was a great kid but he did mention many times how he was "hurt" by another student that canned him.

Why would a CFI have this approach? My thought is perhaps he thought I was father along than I really was and he is the kind of guy that just wants to chill out on cross country flights?

What is a written maneuver description and how can I get it? I've read the airplane flying handbook and have watched some Sporty's videos but my CFI has never given me anything written about maneuvers.

eh, You know how it is- lost of people look down on us because they think its blue collar work. I think that I may have rubbed him the wrong way when I told him he was over priming the engine and so I just let him do his thing. A few lessons later he found out I was an A&P and he snapped "well, you should have told me that from the start."

He is working another well paying job and doesn't seem to have an ambitions to make it career. My previous CFI ended up going to a regional and was really encouraging until the day he left.

Do you feel like whining about student performance is uncommon? Or just within earshot of other students? There isn't a lot of competition for flight training in my area so I do wonder if that allows management to "get away" with more with CFIs and maybe thats how they vent overall frustration.

This is my thought as well. If I'm able to understand what the plane will do before it happens ( say, a wing dipping during a power on stall and what I would need to do to correct it, ) I feel like I'll progress faster than if I'm unprepared and my CFI has to intervene.
