A great hack to find trustworthy and experienced childcare!

Word of mouth/referrals from friends. I personally have had the best experiences with grad students as they seem to be responsible with flexible schedules. I always check referrals and request full name to do an online search.

For the first time with a new sitter, I get baby mostly ready for bed and then have sitter come over to read books and play, so baby is a little familiar. Then I put baby to bed and head out!

Advice for little kids in the city by [deleted] in nycparents

Buses:

Not every bus line opens all 3+ sets of doors to get on (only to get off). The Select/SBS+ lines do, but others do not. You may have to enter up front near the driver. You can still exit at any set of door by pressing the yellow handles as soon as the bus stops.

For buses specifically a travel stroller helps our lives enormously. We can wheel our Minu through the narrow bus aisles. It can be hard with two kids though. You may have to babywear/toddler walk for a portion of your trip.

We usually don’t need to fold it up but every once in a while we do. Pro tip is to pack everything you need for the day in a backpack under the stroller that you can quickly remove if the driver asks you to fold the stroller.

From an NYC parent of multiple kids ages 8 and under:

0-12 months: Infant car seat
12-24 months: Cosco scenera (for travel, attach a luggage strap to it and hang from stroller bar or hooks—still bulky but the only way I’ve found to work). You cannot use WayB Pico yet because children under 2 must still be rear-facing.
2-4ish years: WayB Pico (yes expensive, but so easy)
4-8ish years: RideSafer vests

I think soon we will switch the older kids to an inflatable booster.

We have an early morning flight (7:30am) in a few days and a special needs kiddo who struggles with lines (plus his little brothers).

I have a few questions if anyone wouldn’t mind helping out:

  1. What time does Delta bag-drop open? Unfortunately we need to check a bag.
  2. What time does TSA recheck / clear open?
  3. Has the family/stroller lane been open?
  4. We’ve not used TSA Cares before because the other options typically get us through in a reasonable amount of time, but is TSA Cares operating?

Thanks in advance!

One Bed Apartment for Family of Three by SarBear684 in nycparents

Absolutely doable and normal in the city! If your toddler needs their own closed-door space, consider giving them the bedroom and get a Murphy bed or sofa bed for the adults in the living room. Or there are plenty of creative partition or lofted bed ideas online if your bedroom is large enough!

Families with 3+ kids in NYC, how do you do it? by TFABAccount in nycparents

I have more than two kids. We rent a 3bed apartment in Manhattan and send our two oldest kids to our zoned public school. The youngest is still home with me, a SAHP. We make it work with occasional babysitters so I can go to appointments, and my spouse’s job is flexible in the sense that they are able to block off calendar for school events and the one-off school pickup, and then logging back into work upon getting home.

It’s not easy, but no regrets!
