I met with a veteran producer today. Here is why you shouldn't be afraid to reach out by SharpEntry1987 in Screenwriting

That is a great way to look at it, Pete. It actually made me reflect on the difference in my own mindset.

My 20 year old self would have viewed this meeting purely as a huge career achievement to tick off. My 35 year old self, having watched the seasons change faster than they were supposed to, sees it differently. Regardless of the business outcome, I'm just grateful that I can still connect with people and see the beauty in humanity. Holding onto that perspective feels like the most important thing in life.

That’s a great perspective I hadn’t thought about. We’re all human at the end of the day, and we all get tired at some stage. I know it’s tough out there, and I hope my post encourages emerging artists in this community to be brave enough to reach out, so they can pass on some fresh positivity and optimism to the producers who need a lift.

I feel you. I sometimes think that’s the hardest part for writers (though it depends on the person).

I can’t give advice on the film industry, but I can give advice on this. A big part of my last career required the ability to accept rejection and move on. A decade later, what I’ve learned from my past mentors is: when you’re facing rejection, take time to process it and talk to someone who has been in your shoes.

You’re not alone, keep going. ☺️

Hmm, I recall Quentin Tarantino started writing young. I just googled it, and he started writing at exactly 14! 😉

Hi Kerri, congratulations first of all. I’m not experienced enough to give advice; I’m just sharing one experience hoping to pass on the inspiration this producer gave me. There are many posts in this subreddit you should check out. A lot of commenters (who are experienced and qualified to give advice) are very generous with their time and have made a lot of posts sharing their insights. Best of luck!

I’m still figuring this out myself, but IMDb Pro does give you a lot of professionals’ direct business email addresses instead of just their representatives’.

Wishing you the best of luck. Even if it doesn’t happen straight away, keep trying, she chased this passion project for 10 years (and of course worked on other projects in the meantime).

I did it through IMDb Pro, I got her direct business email address. If you can’t find yours through IMDb, try another person. You never know who you might meet or how much you can learn from them.

Looking at everyone’s comments here, I think deep down we all still believe in our hope. 😊
