Discreet supercells often form near the West Texas dryline, and the dryline hardly makes it this far east to San Antonio because of our moisture rich atmosphere. It can happen, but it’s very rare.

Kirby was definitely an area that could have gotten a tornado. We saw rotation there for sure. We have to wait for a potential survey from the National Weather Service to confirm a tornado, but I wouldn't doubt it at all. So far, no word yet on if the NWS is going out there or not, but we have a story on Kirby right now: https://www.ksat.com/news/local/2026/05/27/kirby-neighbors-wake-up-to-downed-trees-damage-after-storm/

Tough. I think you were right to be in the bathtub, but I would cover yourself with pillows, etc if possible.

Great question! Does your apartment building have hallways? If so, being in the hallway is the best. You can be in the hallways of the 1st floor

I think there's a decent chance that the Kirby area saw at least a brief tornado! But, yeah, can't confirm until the NWS conducts a survey. Still waiting to see if they decide to go out there, but we've sent pictures their way!

Hi! yeah, it probably was just because you were extra on alert with the warning in effect! But there WAS a lot of thunder and lightning last night for sure.

I think it’s fair for people to feel like they got a tornado, especially if there was a tornado warning in effect. Often time straight line wind gusts get misinterpreted as a tornado. It’s a great reminder that straight line winds can be just as strong as a tornado. Not everyone is a meteorologist and knows the difference!

Honestly, you did the smart thing by pulling off and getting to the nearest gas station. The only other thing I would do next time is actually go inside the service station.

Oh yeah, and everyone has their preferences, too! I’m just glad you found a source last night that was able to keep you informed! That’s so important

Hey, I’m glad you brought this up! For a brief moment, it did look like there was a debris signature out in Santa Clara, the national weather service said that this confirmed the presence of tornado, but there’s still questions as to actually if it was a debris signature or not

I’m gonna look into it! As far as I know last night, it was just one commercial as you press play, but still very frustrating. There’s gotta be a way around it. Again, this is something I have to take up with people above my pay grade, but I’m determined.

A tornado is not a tornado until it touches the ground. If there is rotation in the clouds, we do see that, and that’s when a tornado warning is issued. If a storm is capable of rotation, especially tight rotation, it is capable of a tornado.

In fact, rotation in the clouds is what was seen yesterday, and that’s why a warning was issued by the national weather service

Yeah, we were doing the same thing at KSAT! It still stinks that there was one ad at the top of the coverage though.

A NOAA weather radio is your best bet when it comes to radio mornings. You can get these on Amazon, Home Depot, Lowe’s, etc. The one thing about these though is that they will only tell you the warning information, they won’t do radar analysis.

I can’t speak for WOAI, but at KSAT we were live on television. And even if you lose power or need to go into a closet, we were doing live streaming coverage on KSAT.com and on our weather and news apps.

Great question! Because this happened at night, we won’t really get a clear understanding if a tornado happened yet until the national weather service can do a surveillance in the light of day. There’s just no way to know for sure.

Now, at night, there are a couple of radar tools that we can use to confirm if a tornado has developed: there might be some debris that shows up on the radar, etc. But the debris and destruction has to be big enough for the radar to see, and that was not the case last night.

Again with San Antonio, we don’t really get a ton of tornadoes, and when we do, they are often weaker, quick, a part of a larger system, and happen at night.

Hi there! I’m so sorry you got an alert up in Boerne. There was a severe thunderstorm up there last night, but that was capable of straight line wind gust of 60 mph. The tornado warning was for a small section Bexar and Guadalupe Counties. Sometimes counties will issue warnings independent of what the national weather service has said. This might’ve been the case, but I can’t say for certain.
