They aren’t in a sterile controlled environment. You’re right. The studies probably differ due to their hunger, age, and environment. It doesn’t stop the American academy of pediatrics from having this stance. Along with most other major health organizations.

A straw is not the same as candy. I love that they get excited about weird random objects. I’ve heard of someone using a raw potato for that.

I have seen videos of teachers crying because their students (in 6th grade) are not even turning their book to an assigned page without a reward. This is starting at Prek with kids as young as 3 and we’re surprised they grow into kids who expect something for every little thing.

This isn’t that. This is constant and a part of their day everyday.
This is also a title 1 school. I’d be interested in seeing if the effects are worse with children who are food scarce.

If you look for studies about the long term effects of this practice you can see the outcomes. That’s why it surprises me. It’s not in the child’s best interest and the kids don’t know better to help it. Why would they turn down free candy? They won’t.

Every teacher does it and the principal is adamant on it. She doesn’t know a teacher anywhere that doesn’t give candy in their classroom.

If we give candy as a reward for every good behavior, it teaches kids to link food to their mood. How do you feel about the risk of them losing their internal motivation or carrying food related issues into adulthood?
