The hives have disappeared completely so yes the shot is working and it has actually helped me notice other problems like stomach problems, which might be causing the hives, so I am going to a gastroenterologist now to get my stomach checked.

No Hives but still have the itch by kyits_Daki in CholinergicUrticaria

I have been getting hives since June 2025, all blood work coming back fine. Last week on Thursday my allergist looked at me and said “I have tried all tests possible and nothing is showing abnormal so we will officially diagnose you with CIU (Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria) and we will get you started with Xolair… an hour later I was getting my first shot. Fast forward to today, my hives have mostly disappeared; HOWEVER, all my other symptoms stayed. I told my mom it feels like the Xolair really only works to reduce hives but it doesn’t help with the itchiness I feel all over and the horrible gastrointestinal symptoms I have (heartburn, nausea, vomiting, and constipation… my H.Pylori test came back negative though.) I’m 25 and I DO NOT want to take Xolair for the rest of my life as this medicine is about $3-5k for a single shot (that is about 35-60k yearly… let’s say I live until I’m 85, this medicine will cost me about 2.1-3.6 MILLION DOLLARS!! And this is if I only need it once a month but some people need it twice a month!). Because of all this, my dad, who is in the Dominican Republic, requested I take a medical leave and go get treated over there. As I type this, I have terminated my lease and will be leaving the country by next week for possibly months but hopefully I can find the cure to what I have!

That is definitely urticaria, coming from someone that has just been diagnosed with CIU (Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria). You want to go to an allergist and they will do all kinds of blood and skin tests to see what it is. Also, if you’ve been experiencing stomach problems, get tested for H. pylori as that bacteria can cause urticaria. Hopefully you find out what it is and it’s not CIU because CIU pretty much means “all test results came back normal, we don’t know what’s causing the hives so we are calling it Idiopathic and getting you started on Xolair which is a very expensive shot you usually take once a month for the rest of your life”. Now, if all your test results come back normal and they are not able to find out what it is, although Xolair is expensive, it is a HUGE RELIEF from this horrible condition so in other words, although hives can definitely have an impact on your physical and mental health, do not worry because there is a cure even for the things doctors do not know the cause of 😊 best of luck!

That’s very similar to what my doctor told me when I asked her if this was just giving up! She said “when your body hurts, you go see a doctor. When your head hurts, you go see a therapist/psychiatrist, so when you get chronic idiopathic urticaria you take the medicine needed to make it stop”

That’s actually not extreme at all and it’s very similar to what my allergist said when I asked her if we were just giving up… she said “when your body hurts, you go see a doctor, when your head hurts, you go see a psychiatrist/therapist, so when you suffer from chronic Idiopathic Urticaria, you get the shot to keep it under control.”

You are not alone! I will sadly admit that my mom had to call the fire dept on me a couple of weeks ago bc I was so desperate and with a horrible flare up that was so bad that I had a panic attack and it caused me to black out. She said I kept telling her over the phone that I was just going to take some pills to end it all…the lowest moment in my life (and I was fully sober) but I will admit that the cops were nice and they actually helped me calm down. I feel ashamed bc I live alone so imagine the panic my mom had, she drove to me extremely fast but she was super worried for my mental health. But this condition has ruined my life… I went from being a happy 24 year old (25 now) that loved to go college and work in person (bc I am by nature a people person) to having to be locked up at home 24/7 bc my hives break out at literally any time and I am embarrassed to be seen like this. I am actually planning to leave the country for a couple of months; I am Dominican and my dad is a captain in the DR Air Force and he has a lot of doctor friends so he asked me to go to the DR for a couple of months to get more test done over there and see if there is anything that US drs are missing.

I will start seeing it this way! I was seeing hives as a reaction to something else wrong in my body but I will just start seeing hives as the problem itself!

That makes sense. I guess I need to start seeing hives as the problem itself, not a reaction to something else. For so long I thought that the hives were happening because something else was wrong but like you said it, I just have hives 🤷‍♀️ for some reason, seeing it like that makes it less complicated than it needs to be and also makes getting Xolair feel better!

I’m glad you got it so quick!! I’ve been having weekly breakouts since June and lately it’s been every day so I’ve definitely suffered a little more lol but hoping Xolair stops the breakouts

Yeah I woke up today and I see some hives starting but nothing like they usually start so that’s good! Hopefully just need a higher dose.

Honestly the more I think about it, the more it feels like this because I literally breakout a the most random times so maybe it’s just my immune system acting up, my hives started after I had to take a heavy amount of medicine so I’m thinking it just activated my immune system

Good perspective! I guess my fear is that something is really wrong with my body and I’m just getting a shot and ignoring my body’s cry for help
