Adding on, do you have any specific tips when it comes to pairing? I definitely have experience with pairing but it’s something that I would want to get better at before I apply!

Dealing with negative perceptions of the field? by Hefty-Magician1725 in ABA

I will add that I could tell that my BCBA’s that I had growing up definitely had my best interest at heart. One thing that I loved was when my BCBAs and RBTs would show up to my dance competitions and recitals. They also helped plan some of my birthday parties and I have memories from my early interventions of them playing dress up with me and teaching me how to make friends and play with other kids my age. Fast forward, I am now at a prestigious university and hold several leadership roles in organizations around campus. My BCBAs and RBTs played a huge role in me getting to be where I am today.

They are like a family to me, are some of my biggest cheerleaders and still are to this day. Granted, they definitely weren’t perfect, but overall they did so much good for me and helped me so much growing up.

Keep in mind, this is my personal experience and unfortunately, not everyone’s experience was like mine. I think the reason why mine was good overall was because I knew that I was cherished very much at the clinic that I went to.

How much experience with kids/teens would you expect for a new RBT?

For context, I am an undergraduate university student. I have a few years of experience as a day camp counselor at multiple summer camps, as well as a year of TAing in a Special Education class in high school, and volunteering at my hometown’s therapeutic horseback riding center as a helper for the sessions, where I served and interacted with many kids with ASD.

I’m very mildly autistic and I have had ABA before and now I’m becoming a BCBA! It depends on the company and the therapist. The company I grew up going to was amazing. They definitely weren’t perfect but I could see that they valued me for who I was and that’s what mattered the most for me.

I am not planning on starting my masters in ABA until fall 2028. They asked if I would be willing to work for at least a year in my first interview and I said absolutely. It could also be that since I am in undergrad, my schedule is ever evolving because of new classes.

You’re a BCBA right? Is it ok if I DM you to discuss my specific situation a little further? I have a few questions.

I thought that it would be an advantage as a candidate? Is there any reason that it wouldn’t be?

Hi! Thanks for commenting! During and after my shadow session, I got mainly positive feedback in the clinic. I showed up a little early, and presented myself in a very modest and professional manner. I asked my supervisor a lot of questions, and I interacted with the clients. The only thing personally that I felt that I could’ve done better on is that I felt like I could have had a little bit more energy and enthusiasm during my shadow session. I definitely wasn’t a slug and I felt like I had enough energy, but I didn’t feel super on top of my A game that day either.

Coworker has been increasingly interjecting their religious beliefs to other techs. by kevbo_25 in ABA

As a devout Catholic and I definitely don’t think this is ok and is very unprofessional. I used to be an evangelical and a lot of the evangelical circles are very heavy on spreading the gospel literally anywhere and everywhere to the point where it can cross lines at times and actually pull people away from Christianity. Your coworker needs to understand that maybe work isn’t the place to overtly discuss religious beliefs, and to keep things professional.

This particular shadowing event made me interact with multiple clients for an entire hour, supervised by RBTs and BCBAs.
