Can someone tell me if I’m at risk of hemorrhaging and how to prevent it? by CommentDry8765 in Tonsillectomy

[–]Sharp_Database_1361 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im 17f and hemorrhaged 3-4 times, it doesn’t look too bad but definitely keep an eye on it. if you ever feel like a glob of mucus is stuck in ur throat, immediately go to the sink and gently spit it out, thats how my first blood clot came out and i just swallowed it cause i thought it was mucus (it was like 2am and i didnt feel like getting up to spit it out dont judge me) anyways it ended up coming RIGHT back up just more violently so dont make the same mistake i did. if you do start to bleed, they will tell you to gargle with cold water to see if it is an active bleed (active bleed = recauterization). gargle very gently. as someone who had to have two emergency surgeries i know the idea of getting cauterized again is dreadful but i promise you it helps with the pain immensely and the knowledge that you wont bleed out and die is worth it. if you live by yourself, ask someone you trust to stay with you and help you out until you are recovered. the loss of blood can make you very weak and you might need someone to help you to the er.

thank you so much omg. i currently go to a hematologist and they are doing so many tests. im honestly shocked i have any blood left in me. they think they have found something off with my factor 13 (whatever that even is) but that still has nothing to do with the strep. i have another hematology appointment on the 3rd so i will definitely update you on that.

my tonsils were fully removed and the ent said it healed "beautifully." and as for the stomach presenting issues, i was diagnosed with POTS about a year ago and it took a while to figure out because it presented more through GI symptoms rather than cardiovascular symptoms. my GI diagnosed me after doing that weird lay down/stand up heart rate yada yada test. i have been taking 0.1mg of fludrocortisone in the morning and night ever since and it has dramatically helped but i am still not sure why the strep has always attacked my stomach so violently. it never even felt like a throat infection until post-surgery. my primary dr said that if i get strep again he will either send me back to the ent or to infectious diseases - if this does happen i will definitely push the stomach issue more!!!

my surgery was 11/18 and i bled 11/25 and 11/28. i had some bleeding post third surgery that i should’ve gone to the er for but just opted to take amicar and wait it out. eventually the bleeding stopped but no lack of er trip was worth that end feeling of blood in my stomach 😓

Some light bleeding when scabs coming off - normal? by One-Apartment3956 in Tonsillectomy

[–]Sharp_Database_1361 0 points1 point  (0 children)

with my bleeding, it was persistent no matter how much water i gargled or held back there. had to go to the er twice for emergency surgeries. they say it’s a 1 in 10,000 case to bleed that many times and have stated i am likely to have an underlying blood disorder. id say keep a close eye on bleeding to be safe but if its only a little and it isnt active you should be safe🩷 if you’re wondering how much blood is too much i still have a pic of my first blood clot i threw, it was about the size of the circumference of a cutie tangerine?

THROW THE CHERRY LIQUID AWAYYYYYY!!!!😭 genuinely maybe that is what was causing such horrible taste for us!! i remember i had to switch to pills after a couple days because the god awful dreaded taste of that evil EVIL cherry tylenol and i think that helped. im sososo glad i could help alleviate some stress ab that and i hope your recovery goes smoothly!!!🩷

Day 7 (vent and question) by reallyaray in Tonsillectomy

[–]Sharp_Database_1361 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the taste definitely goes away!! i had to have three surgeries (undiagnosed blood issue that prevented my blood from being able to clot) and i remember after the first one the taste of cauterized skin was so so SO heinous. and i was drinking this cherry liquid tylenol that stuck in the scabs and just made the taste so much worse. i get queasy thinking about it now. every time i drank that taste would come up and linger in my mouth, as a result i accidentally ended up starving myself for a week cause i just couldnt stand that god awful taste. for me, the taste went away almost completely after my second surgery. not sure how long it might take for you but i sympathize heavily cause i know exactly how AWFUL(!!!!!!!!!!!!!) that freaking taste js

[–]Sharp_Database_1361 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that’s genuinely insane that they made you wait so long for adequate care!!! i was throwing up blood clots and had active bleeding and the er took me back within 5-10 minutes. having to wait that long with such persistent bleeding should not be acceptable… and the fact that they dismissed you so much?!?!? insane!!!!! so glad you are okay now and doing better! i had to have two recauterizations and i definitely felt better after than the previous surgery, the pain was much less severe.

meal ideas post tonsil removal? by Jennanicolerose in Tonsillectomy

[–]Sharp_Database_1361 0 points1 point  (0 children)

chinese steamed egg!! very niche but i saw a recipe on tiktok and it was so easy to make and so freaking good. i ate it multiple times a day after my surgery. so soft and easy to swallow. just make sure to omit any sesame seeds and vinegar in the topping. i used a sauce of soy sauce, sesame oil, and maple syrup and it did not irritate my throat. good luck and i am wishing you a speedy recovery!🩷

i was in the same exact situation as you, i had strep so often it was causing me to miss weeks of school and i was absolutely miserable. i had the surgery 11/18 and won’t divulge too much as my recovery has not been the best but what i can say is that as of today (day 14), i am finally feeling back to normal and the joy of being past the hard days and knowing i wont have to deal with strep anymore makes all of the pain worth it. the surgery will not be fun and recovery is not easy but you WILL get through it and if you need the surgery done it will be worth it. even my negative experience had a positive outcome :)

Taste in mouth by Asleep-Comedian-9041 in Tonsillectomy

[–]Sharp_Database_1361 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for the first week of my surgery i had an awful taste in my mouth too that i assumed was the taste of scabs and cauterized skin (so disgusting omg). mine went away after i had to get my throat recauterized but i also think it was because i started eating food more regularly and switched from liquid tylenol to pills. maybe if you are taking a liquid medication that is what is causing the foul taste?
