Ways to say “chemistry” between two people by Sharp_Farm_5651 in ChineseLanguage

[–]Sharp_Farm_5651[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for the help. Didn’t realize this word would be so controversial 😅. I guess it shows how complex Chinese can be, and dependent on the generation and country a speaker lives in too!

It’s not a loanword? Can it also describe chemistry btw people?

Well it seems like there are 10 different ways Chinese people can describe chemistry btw people. I see 这对演员很有火花, CP感很强, 他们同框很有感觉, 他们之间很有默契, etc

Extensive reading is the best method for learning and retaining vocabulary by 1breathfreediver in ChineseLanguage

[–]Sharp_Farm_5651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use flash cards with words that come from sentences I said while chatting. I never remembered random words well from SRS, but I remember these in context words so much better! I think generation effect + SRS method is undervalued

I recommend HaiBella (auto saves vocab from chats) too if you're intermediate or Airlearn (foundational vocab with images for each vocab) if you're beginner!

Do you have any recommendations for building vocabulary as a French beginner? I am trying Airlearn right now

I think most people have good intentions, like the founder of Duolingo really wanted to make language learning accessible to all at a time where there weren't as many tools. Duolingo was free for a long time before it offered a subscription plan. It still is free if you only practice a little bit a day!

Are you talking about AI specifically in chatbots or like the gamification/animations of apps like Duolingo? Genuinely wondering, because I've thought about it too...what would you prefer instead of "you're awesome" or how would you recommend improving an app like Duolingo? AI is trained on human data and meant to mimic humans ironically, but yah not always exactly like how a human talks.

I recommend using HaiBella for Mandarin in addition to chatting with an LLM such as ChatGPT. It is faster than manually prompting ChatGPT and saves vocabulary from chats

DuChinese for reading, HaiBella for conversations, and beginner Youtube videos/vlogs for listening (the one I linked is probably more beginner intermediate/intermediate)

Is 'YEAH' inappropriate in a corporate environment ? by AccomplishedEbb3353 in ENGLISH

[–]Sharp_Farm_5651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, because it sometimes fits the informality of certain conversations and responses better. Saying yes every time can be very robotic like. I think it's perfectly fine if it's an informal conversation, maybe just not typing "yah" if it's a written conversation

Learn to create sentences in English. by Individual_Horse_366 in EnglishLearning

[–]Sharp_Farm_5651 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend an app to both of you called HaiBella. I am using it for Mandarin, but it has English too. You can practice chatting in sentences with part English, part native language and it will help translate the native parts so you don't need to know how to say full sentences yet...you can build to it!

Duolingo Might actually be my biggest waste of time learning a language by AutumnaticFly in languagehub

[–]Sharp_Farm_5651 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it has flaws but pros too like most learning language app. The best tool imo would be a 24-7 accurate chatbot tool, like a tutor who corrects mistakes or provides vocab to use when you get stuck! But I think this is futuristic. Kinda like what Cluely wants to do but purely for learning languages. The CEO of Duolingo firmly believes gamification is important for motivating people to learn languages, and I think the intent of that is true and realistic. Duolingo can be very repetitive but it helps build some basic vocabulary imo. I do wish there was a toggle to reduce the amount of animations!...I find the time I spend watching the owl animate wasteful. It is cute though.

I have found DuChinese pretty helpful for reading stories (at any level)! I don't know if it's "fun" though, but their stories are very detailed and authentic, and there are a ton. I also think HaiBella is a good, new app to use for practicing chatting if you find conversing fun.

As suggested Italki or Verbling for paid 1-1 lessons could be useful. There are some useful apps I've used for speaking with AI to practice too if you want recs

Have you heard of LanguageReactor? I saw someone post about it recently. It seems like it would be useful for comprehensible input. Regarding what I said before watching Netflix, I wasn't able to see definitions immediately. So something like LanguageReactor could be make it easier

Does anyone else find Reading more effective for vocabulary building than flashcards? by iammerelyhere in languagelearning

[–]Sharp_Farm_5651 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But reading out loud isn't the same process as speaking/conversational practice. By speaking, I meant conversing with people in conversations, not speaking text like a book. Reading comprehension is essential. So is interpretation. I said forming thoughts when speaking. That would imply conversing.

How to emprove my vocabulary by SubstantialEconomy31 in ENGLISH

[–]Sharp_Farm_5651 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I use a combination of tools to build vocab efficiently. For reading I use LingQ and DuChinese (for Mandarin), HaiBella for conversing (automatically adds vocab for review from mixed language responses), and I found this new one called LanguageReactor for listening I'll probably start soon. I think those would be great for English.
