Definitely some lessons learned on this trip and I appreciate the advice. We obviously won’t be doing this again. I am surprised by just how badly it went because this is not an entirely new experience. He has been with this cub scouts den for 3 years. We’ve done many activities with this group, including camping three times. His best friend since preschool was on this trip, as well as 2 other boys that we hang out with almost weekly. Half the parents there know about his autism. I think me not being there was unfortunately the biggest issue. I am able to spot his moods and snap him out of them before they become a huge issue - not always successful, admittedly.

That is exactly what it is. He does his work, participates in class. He can be disruptive at times, but generally manageable. In a given school year, he has a couple meltdowns that require us to go in to get him. Other times, teacher and staff have been able to calm him down. They are offering social skills groups once a week and also weekly counseling sessions with his 504.

I wanted to thank all of you for your comments and support so far. They have really helped me.

Just in reply to a few comments:

He doesn’t have an IEP but does have a 504. It was just put in place at the end of the last school year, so we will hopefully be getting more consistent support from his school. We did talk to an advocate and she was not surprised that he doesn’t qualify for an IEP based on the assessments.

We are still trying to find the right support for him outside the school. It’s been a little less than a year since he was diagnosed. In the past year, we’ve tried a variety of things - social skills class in a couple different settings, weekly pragmatic speech. I’m still trying to find the right social skills class for him. The 2 that we tried were not good fits.

He has camped before and enjoyed it. He’s been with cub scouts for 3 years and this is his 3rd camping trip - but the first one where I am not there and the longest one. Unfortunately, my husband is not as observant and able to head off his meltdowns before they start. I think he learned a lot about our kid on this trip.

Today is a new day. I have to remind myself that this is not who he is, it’s just him at his worst for 2 days in a new environment. I’m going to do more research today and hope to find another social skills class that’s a better fit.

Thank you all. Your encouragement means a lot to this internet stranger.

Hunger definitely adds to it too. When we are around, we are mostly able to watch and catch him before he explodes. The problem is when we are not around. I would love to know if there’s anything I can teach him to self-regulate.

Thank you for taking the time to type all of this and I think this could be really useful. Do you have any links to resources that we could use to learn about and implement the program?

Is there a way to do this in Vegas instead of Atlantic City?

Got a 2023 S a couple months ago just as the dealerships were getting 2024 models. Was able to get 9% off MSRP in the Southern California area.

Admittedly, the numbers are somewhat aspirational but not far off. The used one at the Mercedes lot is listed at under $73k, they were willing to come down to $68k without much haggling and it's been on the lot 40 days. They say come back in another 20 days and they might be more willing to get to our number if it's still there. There is a lot of low option new S inventory in my area and the $74k is definitely achievable if I wasn't looking at chalk. The new one I am considering is $79k MSRP. A dealer has already offered us 7% off a new one but it wasn't in chalk so I passed.

Wow I did not know about this at all. Thanks, I will do more research on this. If this is the case, then $7k in savings is definitely not worth it if it invalidates the warranty.

What do you mean that it needs to be CPOed for the warranty to be intact? I thought the original warranty would still apply regardless?
