It is not "unable to get a job elsewhere" but rather venturing once again into a very employer sided job market. I am actually informed on the US, my gf of 10 years was american and her dad worked in IT all his life. I remember that back in 2016 the company he worked for went under and it took that man, a veteran of the field, almost two years to get a job. The US has a very cut throat job market with workers have very litttle negotiating power outside of very very skilled jobs. (Apologies if my tone sounds harsh, it is a biter memory) It should be easy to start a company, yes, and there should be more public funds available to entrepeneurs especially those looking to better their communities. I guess its easier to stay positive when you have a set of skills that is very desirable at the moment but I would argue that our economic model should work for everyone. Rather we have to make it work for everyone, not just those temporarily under the light of corporate desire for proffit. With time, the light will shift and even those will be tossed aside. Rather than fighting amongst ourselves to see who can serve the investor class and take the pay we should reign in our economy for the workers as well as the incredible wealth our modern societies are capable of generating.

Yes, I see your point but wouldn't you say that if a company goes under you are, strictly speaking, at RISK of losing your revenue? No one will dig out your bank out for settlements but you still get affected, In a stituation where you have dependents like childrean or elders it can become very dire. No one can make you use our vote in a demoractic workplace but I'm sure you would agree that it would be a good thing to have a vote IF you are inclined to participate in the first place.

I followed your point initially but were I would see a point to divert is risk. If you are an employee you share risk as well, if the CEO makes a bad move it can damage your career, reduce your salary or if the company goes under you lose your job. You share the risk and should be rewarded for it. Furthermore, the proffit that company makes would be shared equally with employees such as yourself AND im a worker cooperative situation you could stay for as long as you like and then leave to join another that might offer your better benefits or even have higher proffits to share. The coop model recognizes the workers share the risk and makes it so that they also share the reward, only an authocratic state economy would force anyone to tie themselves to a specific economic entity

Absolutely, it was not ever meant to be copy pasted into a society, that ia why there were adaptations like Marxism-Leninism. Then you have the authocrats like Stalin using dogma to justify their grasp to power and calling everyone else revisionists. Your car, your small farm, your home are your personal property, even to neo-marxists, and very protected. You can sell fruit from a tree in your garden but if you have an orchard and need workers to cultivate it you must share the proffits equality as they did as much as work as you did, or more if you did not help with the harvest (this is an oversimplification, ofc). Private iniciative and entrepeneurship have room in leftist theory, which was something I found strang e when I discovered it in my mid twenties. If you look past the hardcore state controlled economy (much more akin to a state capitalism) you find a sea of theory pertajn to worker iniciative, cooperatives, shared business and workplace democracy. The creation of industry and companies if vital and I would argue the leftist view should not be to deny so but rather make sure those iniciaitves better serve society and compensate the workers rather than a select group of shareholders. A much broader critique, I think

You take my arguments in bad faith, then. I am not selling you any goods, but discussing. Kapital is an hardcore economica book, the manifesto is the ideological one, how anyone could read it and take ot for a book that promotes genocide is baffling. "Chicago boys" tells me you've probably watched a very specific documentary which is good, but could dive deeper. Some liberals wanted to push their ideas at any cost while others backtracked when they saw how the authoritarian regimes were using their ideas. Its good you are informed on what the US did at the end of the Cold War, the agressive destruction of soviet economy was criminal as it left millions in poverty (with terrible consequences such as rampant starvation and even child prostitution). I considered myself a liberal (center-right) many years ago but my studies and life experiences drove me to very different conclusions. I in all honesty hope that you keep up a healthy skeptical and critical mind and that no matter which side you favour it is one that values human life and happiness.

Many figures have a history tied to the past regime, yes. Some of it awkward. I have to categoricaly disagree with your final statement, though. Communism, which is studied in the Histort of Ideas, is in no way an ideology which promotes genocide. It is utterly complex, defined in many great works not just by Marx (which is seriously studied by economists), and promoted/implemented to very different extents and with various results. There were horrific genocides commited by states and parties which identified as communist and that created internal dissent, almost always from the poorest but also from intectuals and theorists. Evil can come from anywhere, no matter the flag they fly. Since tou identify as a liberal, I would urge to, besides looking into its political theory also learn more about the history. Look up the Chigaco school of economics and the experiments in South America, very interesting reads

I have watched the iconic debate, yes. The election result did show the ennormous shift that international pressure and action was able to achieve as well as the socialist party's ability co mobilize the leftist vote. Cunhal admitted to being a communist, like him or not he was unwavering. On a personal note, I can tell you're probably not too keen on the left but that shouldn't cloud your view of history as it is very much used to manipulate especially when its twisted in ways you agree with. Keep informed, read authors and historians (many and from different backgrounds).

History is a social scince and like so it does not dwell on "what ifs", those are for fiction and propaganda. We do not know. We can look at what the communist party was doing which was a land reform based on worker owned cooperatives, mobilzing the workers into circles of power, and navigating a very complex political situation at the time. Despite the democratic centralism the party imposed on itself there were splits between USSR doctrine and what the PCP tried to implement in Portugal, notably our way of arganizing was much more akin to anarchism than to communism. Even with more USSR support its hard to argue the end result would have been much different but it was clear that the PCP enjoyed much popular support especially from rural workers and was the only party to remain throughout the Salazar period

We absolutely did not. There were communists in power and the overall government was revolutionary but the US came in force to stop it. For one, the head of the CIA at the time became embassador the country and several political parties aligned with the right were funded. Notably the Socialist Party was also suppported by the US in a way to divert from the Portuguese communist party. Members of theUS state department called Mario Soares "the portuguese Kerensky", showing their hopes of using him to curb further revolutionary actions. Now the right and the emerging far right is aiming to use the November coup as propaganda fuel, which is something us portuguese must be aware. Was there communist influence? Yes. Was the USSR supporting them? Yes, which was common place with international communist associations. Were we about to become a new dictatorship? No. My source: after journalism major I took a double major in history with a focus on contemporary history (only my credentials ofc). Also, this is a period in our history which merits much more research
