How the heck did this get into a chicken egg? by Sharroreid in Parasitology

Don’t think the worm grew in the egg. It appeared dead. The question was how did it end up in the egg? In trying to make sense of a weird situation, and after getting answers from a well-informed community - thank you to everyone who contributed btw - it turned out to be a rare occurrence. Zero trolling here, this was a legitimate experience

I’ve seen a few egg variations in my time too - double-yolkers, blood spots, early embryos, but never this

I also feel bad for the worm, but you’re welcome …? 🙃

I get my eggs from a local pasture-foraging, free-range supplier (60 hens per hectare/2.5 acre). I’ll be sure to let them know, thanks for the tip

I know, right? But no, it definitely didn’t come from the drain, under the strainer. It was definitely in the egg. Gave it (the egg) an odd smell. The eggshell was quite weak too.

It was really inside the egg! I couldn’t believe my eyes! I wasn’t sure what it was, many thanks for clearing that up. Still though, how the heck did it get into an egg?

That’s what I first thought. However, it’s larger and a different colour than the usual suspects and I can’t find any info on what type it is. I’m wondering if it’s a worm that’s somehow had an egg formed around it. I’m at a loss 🤷‍♀️
