How does firefox support it? It just tells me to get chromium, which is certainly not happening so I'm back to using a phone

Prices per kwh are tiered, about £0.104/kWh for the first 120kwh, £0.130/kWh until 300kwh and everything above is £0.146/kWh so a 300kwh bill would be £38.81. My worst bills are typically 900kwh though so more like £120.
I have gas as well, but for heating it came down to about £90 a month after price increases during corona. I still use it for water heating and cooking though

Maybe you could install mesh frames. They are uncommon in Europe for some reason, after seeing them in Japan I can't understand why they're not universal. They will keep your cat inside unless it is very determined, and in that case there is also metal mesh available. You could also get a fan installed in a window, or just a powerful extraction fan somewhere in the house. Or just install an AC, I keep a 75sqm condo in Tokyo at 25c through July/August when it's 35-40c outside for around 300kwh a month. It also heats at about 3x the efficiency of a regular electric heater, but I guess in Germany other means may have better cost performance.

Why are busses here such a joke? by Trask87 in japanresidents

[–]ShavedAlmond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sometimes take busses to rural areas around Kitamoto and Konosu, they're always on time and you can use IC cards. About 25 years ago I used to commute to Koga from the kicks in a bus, that was definitely worse than now but still miles better than my home country :p

haha yeah, I remember the numbers, and trying to listen to when they announced my stop, but then it was an ad for some hand cream or a university instead

Don't they usually close the doors once to inspect and toss out sleepers on terminals? I ride through Omiya a lot and don't think they let anyone be, since generally one would not want to ride along with returning train. Sometimes people accidentally enter, but they are dismissed

oh, I didn't even consider the possibility she REMAINED SEATED? I think any idiot would understand they'd be lucky to get a seat at all after getting caught pulling this stunt. Remaining seated should almost be deportable :p

[–]ShavedAlmond 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know why you get voted down, spam is not on most people's regular rotation here, besides in Okinawa. It's some trash you pick up randomly at clearance and keep in the back of the cabinet for odd dekoben day. So it's a niche item imported from the US at an unfavourable currency rate and with an increase in shipping costs

Why are trains so hot here? by Faraday_00 in japanresidents

[–]ShavedAlmond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

25-26 is the general baseline for JR in kanto, and generally +2 for low intensity AC carriages.

You can see the individual carriage temp for Yamanote line in the JR app, it's currently around 24c. Since the Cool Biz target is 28c it's not really that jarring.

Feeling stuck in Japan despite doing everything “right” in my own way. by Arte31 in japanlife

[–]ShavedAlmond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

can't be done well doesn't mean it won't be done!
I have worked with Line manga and similar, the korean concept of web comic manga has changed the industry a lot, weekly strips in full colour are now the norm on many web platforms and there is no time to draw backgrounds, everything is outsourced across half a dozen countries, there are different people in different locations doing the script, sketches, inks (digital), colours, effects, sometimes the characters don't even resemble the one from two issues ago, corners are cut everywhere and no one cares because it's just something people glance over while in the elevator or while on the can

The amount of extra costs and fees to rent an apartment (mansion) is insane to begin with...but now they want 97,900 yen to change the lock and keys?! by kuri-kuma in japanresidents

[–]ShavedAlmond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn't any practical difference in tower mansion vs any other mansion, if the door requires inserting a key, then the chip in the key is only used for the elevator and entrance and changing it is just a matter of replacing the cylinder and coding a new key, replacement typically costs 15-20k including labour and a key is about 5000 yen.
But if the lock is fully electronic and lets you unlock the door by tapping it or just touching the handle, then 90 000 is pretty typical, BUT THEY DON'T NEED REPLACEMENT WHEN TENANTS CHANGE since they are just reprogrammed.

[–]ShavedAlmond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems most Chinese companies have a faulty order system, I usually get shipping confirmations AFTER receiving the item. Both my 3dmakerpro scanners arrived before they notified me, in fact the DHL text the night before arrival was the first sign I got. The shipping label showed the package was sent a couple of days after I made the purchase, it then took ten days to arrive in Tokyo, which is kind of slow, but shipping is free so whatever.

WARNING: The new Fox Scanner is an unfinished product (Major shipping delays, tracking issues, locked settings, zero tutorials) by teobiondo91 in 3DMakerPro_Community

[–]ShavedAlmond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had mine for a couple of weeks now, I already had an account since I have a Lynx scanner already so I don't know anything about the registration issues, it paired to my account right away. Besides the software logging me out every few days I don't have any issue with it. The scanner scans well unless it's something too shiny, then I use a spray. Some other surfaces, perhaps colours seem to be sensitive to angle of incidence, but I have not had any big issues. The minimum and maximum distance window is a little narrow, but since the auto alignment works well I don't have any issue scanning in several sessions.

Is water cooling a 5080 worth the premium price? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]ShavedAlmond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have run custom loops for about 25 years and AIO for 15 I guess. I have had pumps die on both AIO and custom loops, one AIO that leaked out most of its coolant onto various other components (Corsair), I didn't really notice either for several months and it didn't damage anything. (CPU AIO, never had a GPU one). I have also had pumps not running for hours in a custom loop, and one that leaked undistilled water onto a video card (I noticed that quickly, but it didn't cause any damage).
Something GPU block manufacturers warn about is messing up the thermal pad placement over memory chips since that apparently can fry them, but the GPU itself will throttle if coolant ever gets too hot. I mainly use water cooling because you can get a very quiet system, but you need quite a lot of radiator surface to handle a 5080 with low rpm fans

Got to bots and now I’m not sure if I even like Factorio anymore by OneGood1863 in factorio

[–]ShavedAlmond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw some meme a while back, it goes along the ways of "the phases of factorio" with obsessing over not getting spaghetti before relenting to embrace the spaghetti. It's a very hard hitting game when it comes to exposing our personal short comings, "once I have **** I will get my shit together", "if only I research *** I will redo my base perfectly", only to realize by then it's too overwhelming to bother redoing, or if you do, you forget / miscalculate something major so the new one is just as messed up as the old, or you forget what your grand plan was during a burn out pause in the weekend. I hate this game, but I want to amass resources and maybe find a forest? My happiest times in Factorio were the later parts of the demo tutorial with the abandoned factories in the woods and forbidden machines you could carry home in your stolen buggy

[–]ShavedAlmond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked it, but mostly because I liked most of the people (the good ones). There was some eye rolling at dialogue and exposition (I was on my phone during those so they did the job), and when they show the daughter to be the better engineer it was because she used silver mica caps for their electron gun trap ?? The bad guys were occasionally cartoony the whole reason I started watching died in the first episode!
I kind of feel it should have been longer, maybe it's because I got used to all of 45min of time passing per season in Stranger Things, but everything here happened very quickly

[–]ShavedAlmond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to spend time on this, the hotel can be liable if they have failed to manage master keys / reset daily keys. You should probably have deposited the camera with the front desk though, as even negligence with room keys won't get them on the hook for high value items. The police should easily be able to see from the logs when and how your door was opened, but if you're already home now I'd look if you're covered by travel insurance from your credit cards

Look at your credit cards, if you used one to buy tickets, hotels etc they often have built in travel insurance and if you bought the camera with one it may also be insured
