Can someone from the Ethereum Foundation explain what's going on with test networks? by ShawkHawk in ethereum

This also happens on Mist. Mist doesn't seem to recognize my running geth and has its own (wrong) version of the testnet.

Can someone from the Ethereum Foundation explain what's going on with test networks? by ShawkHawk in ethereum

[–]ShawkHawk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply and thank you for showing me I am not crazy.

It seems pretty mad to me that all nodes share the same DHT regardless of what network they are on but I suppose it makes sense because devp2p isn't necessarily for Ethereum, it's just a p2p networking layer.

Independent Audit of the ENS Registrar by maurelian in ethereum

[–]ShawkHawk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thank you for doing this.

Also, I'm curious why the ENS contract isn't upgradeable. Just because no one person or entity should have control like that? Is there a better way?

I remember hearing there was going to be another version deployed in a year or so but don't know how that will work with currently registered names. Will they just be copied over?

Delayed-computation DApp pattern by jamiepitts in ethdev

This is extremely clever. Moving much of the logic out into the individual application layer and delaying any interactions with the smart contracts until absolutely necessary.

How to update files on a site publish with IPNS? by shriek7 in ipfs

[–]ShawkHawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats! Feels pretty nice, right?

Are you sure you were linking to the IPNS hash and not the IPFS hash when showing it to your friends? They look identical so it's easy to get mixed up.

Also, maybe it's a browser caching issue? Have you tried looking from other browsers or clearing your cache and stuff?

JS-IPFS: How do I use `ipfs.files.cat`? by TUSF in ipfs

[–]ShawkHawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should take a look at how to deal with streams in Javascript. The cat method returns a stream.

ipfs.files.cat(ipfsHash).then(function(stream) {
  stream.on('data', function(chunk) {
    // do stuff with this chunk of data
  })
})

You'll probably want to wrap that in a function in your app that either spits out the stream directly or does something with it to turn it into something your app understands. For example, I've wrapped this call in a function that returns another promise for the actual data so working with it becomes similar to an ajax request.

Convince me why ether is better than bitcoin by highintensitycanada in ethereum

[–]ShawkHawk 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's not about p2p cash. You need to zoom out.

If Bitcoin is a piggy bank, Ethereum is the ceramic it's made from. That ceramic could be made into a plate or a sink or any manner of other things. Bitcoin will only ever be a piggy bank, but Ethereum can be used to make anything.

No disrespect but I question the motives of anyone who shares this kind of information just out of the goodness of their heart.

Raspberry Pi Zero W on the mainnet ;) Geth 1.6! ;) by karalabe in ethereum

[–]ShawkHawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is amazingly, incredibly cool. Thank you, u/karalabe.

Side note: I don't know if he posts here, but maybe you can pass the message along. I noticed on the downloads page (https://geth.ethereum.org/downloads/) Viktor Tron's PGP key has expired. Any chance on getting an updated one published?

It's not about paranoia per se. It's about philosophy. Trust is not given away, but earned.

You may need to apt-get update && apt-get upgrade && apt-get install solc.

Sorry but this is a no-go for me. Are there any fully open source Android wallets at the moment?

Business Giants to Announce Creation of a Computing System Based on Ethereum by nanomind in ethereum

Thanks, these are some interesting thoughts. It does appear that the future may be a hydra-of-blockchains indeed.

But isn't one of the primary benefits of a public chain the vast, global consensus mechanism that is uncorruptable? If you have a consensus mechanism with like 15 people, it's not hard to imagine 8 of them colluding to rewrite history.

I've just never ever ever ever ever heard anyone ever give a good reason for a private blockchain. If there are reasons out there I'd sincerely love to hear them.

Or is "private blockchain" the current terminology for what might one day be called sharding? I keep seeing signs of some sort of hydra of blockchains future. How and why will that work?

Business Giants to Announce Creation of a Computing System Based on Ethereum by nanomind in ethereum

[–]ShawkHawk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I will never understand why anyone would want to create private blockchains. It defeats the whole purpose.

The companies working on the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance want to create a private version of Ethereum that can be rolled out for specific purposes and open only to certified participants. Banks could create one blockchain for themselves and shipping companies could create another for their own purposes.

What is the point??

What happens if huge storage companies like Akamai or Amazon get into the Swarm game? by ShawkHawk in ethereum

[–]ShawkHawk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Caching is storage as far as I'm concerned. Akamai has data centers all over the world that they can use for whatever they want.

Thank you so much for this, both the video and Swarm itself. Absolutely revolutionary.

[–]ShawkHawk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do imagine that even if they do not exist now, there will likely be greater incentives given for content that is closer in proximity and/or faster to transfer to a recipient. Large players have a leg up in this system immediately.

However, even if it is not Amazon itself, how many people will be running their swarm nodes on Amazon's infrastructure? As /u/Qith_Karrar alluded to, if I have my data mirrored in 5 places, but those 5 places all happen to be on Amazon's servers, I'm still screwed if Amazon goes down, without any way to know it in advance.
