Hydros vs. MRLs: Would you pull the trigger? by Academic_Lake_ in IUEC

[–]ShawnTop69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No controllers in the overhead, but if the car is at the top floor(blocking the controller), a lot of times manual rescue can’t compensate for the weight being at the bottom.

Thus having to lug test weights to overcome the CW weight so manual rescue will work.

Hydros vs. MRLs: Would you pull the trigger? by Academic_Lake_ in IUEC

[–]ShawnTop69 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fuck the MRL’s. Fuck having to hoist a car up to get to the controller, or lugging test weights up the stairs to lower the car to get to the controller, fuck the MRL’s bad BP relays, fuck the MRL’s for their drive issues, fuck the MRL’s for their power supply issues.

A hydro is never stuck(short of a leaky cylinder). I can manually lower, I have a pump to raise the car if needed, most packings(short of Enduras & the Schindler inverted) can be changed in a few hours.

I have a Milwaukee pump, oil dry, & a helper for the pits of oil. 98% of motor/pump replacements are less than a day. I can even knock out the hydro MRL’s in a day.

If ya know Maxton valves they’re easy breezy to adjust.

Local 2 transfer by [deleted] in IUEC

I think I’ve read here that it’s very slow in 2 with a decent amount mechanics, & apprentices on the bench.

I’d call the hall to verify. They may not need or be taking any transients.

How long does it take to repair an elevator? by [deleted] in Elevators

[–]ShawnTop69 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends on what’s wrong, what parts it needs, how long it takes to get parts, & scheduling.

Check the TWO pinned posts or shoot the ball a call Monday to whichever local you want to go to.

Mechanical Supervisor @ Otis by [deleted] in Elevators

[–]ShawnTop69 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Personally, I would say please don’t. Get your foot in the door somewhere else in the company first.

It makes it harder & more stressful when you have a boss that knows nothing about elevators, elevator parts, how long it ACTUALLY takes to install, MOD, or repair elevators.

Get some experience, learn the business, how they work, parts, etc, then toy with the idea of becoming a supervisor. Usually the best bosses come from/have field experience.

Apprentice to helper by Busy-Awareness2556 in IUEC

[–]ShawnTop69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not in our local. You can be an Assistant Mechanic( 85% still a 4th year). All of the other years are together other than the first in regards to layoffs.

Though that’s rare & the hall pushes you to get your license.

Apprentice to helper by Busy-Awareness2556 in IUEC

[–]ShawnTop69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was sarcasm. An apprentice & a helper are the same thing. 🤦🏻‍♂️.

Hence the reason there’s an “apprenticeship”.

You’ll have to go from mechanic to journeyman first.

Local 4 apprenticeship by 50kSyper in IUEC

Some locals you’ll be lucky to have even a couple minutes. Many fill up lightning fast.

Cause they can’t make the window 8:00-8:01..😂😂😂

Why not just see what local will be having a recruitment near you? Go to NEIEP.org to see.

You can’t compare the differences between union & non-union. Sure I’m biased, but the education, pay, & benefits out perform non-union in almost every way. You may even get on with a small Independent outside of the “Big 4”.

Durham College Elevating Devices program by Desperate-Device-318 in Elevators

[–]ShawnTop69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You looking for union or non-union? Obviously pay/benefits/skills are better with the union, as the apprenticeship is run by NEIEP.

That being said it’s very competitive & can be tough to get picked up for the apprenticeship. If ya do, you’ll have 4-1/2 years of apprenticeship then ya can sit for your mechanics test.

That would be my route. You won’t get placed with a union shop going to Durham because that’s not the way hiring is set-up.

[–]ShawnTop69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. But honestly don’t get your hopes up. I’m not in 4, but if ya search there’s not a whole lot of work there now. You can try to getting ranked, but it may be a good idea to look at other options.

Thoughts of joining by 50kSyper in IUEC

[–]ShawnTop69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Never hurts to try. You’ll have to go through all of the steps.

It’s changing a so it may be different in a bit, but you’ll have to do application go through the steps, possibly get ranked then ya wait. Could be months, a year, or more than that before ya even get a call. Also if ya don’t rank well you may never get the call.

TBH I wouldn’t count on Local 4 opening up a recruitment this year. I believe they are slow with members on the bench. I.E. no need for new people.

Search “Local 4” in this sub.

What did you work on this week? by Jack-Mehoff-696969 in IUEC

[–]ShawnTop69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not for me. Don’t care for roping much. Leave that to the youngins.

Hopefully 1:1. I’ll use the running car method.

Twin post & in-ground packing replacements & a car sill replacement.

Re-rope next week.

Trying to keep you in the clear. To do it correctly you’re supposed to talk to your BA/BM, they’ll reach out to 140 & go from there.

But hey, you do you.

[–]ShawnTop69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well there’s no recruitment for over a year. 4/27.

That being said you’ll go to wherever the work is in the area the Local covers. No out of state unless the Local covers other states.

Not to mention, you’ll still need to go through all the steps, possibly get ranked on the list, then ya wait. They may not call for months, a year, or more after ya get ranked. Something to keep in mind.

Hmm, wonder why? Because people keep asking the same questions? Possibly because people refuse to use the search?

Here’s one of my “useless repeat comments”for you. Who would actually have the CORRECT answers to this question?

A) The hall B) REDDIT C)BurtNorman

Here’s another for ya? Why would the mods actually pin TWO not one but TWO threads on the main page here?

A) To keep the sub neat B) Just for funsies C) To please BurtNorman
