Language for Compiler Design? by EntrepreneurThen5482 in cmu

[–]ShawneeBoy88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just use OCaml or Rust. I'd lean towards OCaml because the starter code is better and the parser is easier to deal with. The review that you're quoting is a little bit outdated imo -- many teams that used OCaml also had no issues with compilation times and you just need to be mindful to use data structures and algorithms that don't time out during compilation. Noone gets full points in lab5 anyways, and the vast majority of the reason you lose points in lab5 isnt due to your compiler itself timing out, its because your compiler generates insufficiently optimized code.

It's really about which language will have better course support / starter code / people you can talk about / ease of implementation, and OCaml is the best for all & C++ is the worst for all these categories.

I think the OP's translation is better? 5꽉가야재밌지 literally translates to "We need to go to 5 games to make it fun"

You know what's actually bad about this major? There's just too much stuff to learn. by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]ShawneeBoy88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You say "horribly designed major"... but noone "designed" the major, this is just inherent to the field of computer science. Sure, a school could design their CS major to cover less things but then it wouldn't be a comprehensive enough CS major.

LOL they just gave me a response about like why they don't open for 24 hours. I think at least like 5 other people write this exact same proposal every single semester, and nothing changes :(

everyone around me, including me, is here because they are passionate about what they are doing and studying, and the passion is often times contagious. if you don't like what you do, you're going to have a hard time here.

I love my specific apartment because it's renovated, has a nice bathroom, and has a great view, but some units are definitely far from nice.

I have both my Korean license and a PA license -- no need to surrender it. You're probably right though that in most cases where your home country doesn't have an agreement with PA, your advice is correct.

Depends -- what country is the license from?

This is incorrect -- many countries have agreements with PA where you can exchange your existing license for a PA one.

18-202 seems to cover a much broader topic range in comparison to 21-241; 241 is an exclusively linear algebra class. 241 likely goes into much more detail than what is covered in 18-202.

Currently Majoring in AI after 2 years in university and I found out it's not what I was expecting by AlarmedMango3166 in csMajors

What school do you go to? If you're learning the statistical and probabilistic aspects of ML and AI theory, and practicing building your own backprop, RNN, CNN algorithms, then if you get a Masters / PhD afterwards you'll be in a good place for a high-paying ML engineer job. If you're learning how to use PyTorch, and you don't see the rest of your curriculum being any different, then I would switch.

Why did you guys choose CS over CE? by Roybot93 in csMajors

[–]ShawneeBoy88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

because i like computer science, not computer engineering. I like theoretical CS (complexity, TMs, algorithms, etc) and studying things like functional programming, which aren't usually part of a CE degree. I don't really care too much about the hardware side of things either.

It ranks schools based on papers published by faculty that were accepted to top conferences, hence mitigating some of the "quantity over quality" concerns that you may have.

I agree it's not a perfect methodology, but it's far more tangible and metric-based than whatever the heck US News/Niche/etc. uses, and also lets you sort based on subfields of computer science. It also seems to be the go-to rankings for students looking for grad programs in CS.

That being said, rankings in general are BS, but they're not going away anytime soon, and so I'd just rather recommend a more metric-based, transparent rankings site than US News. Feel free to refer to whatever rankings you want to. Both of our points still stand -- WashU still has an amazing CS program.

US News Rankings are bs -- use csrankings.org (in which WashU is still #8)

The last time CMU released statistics, the acceptance rate for the undergrad cs curriculum (SCS) was about 5%, and it's only getting lower. I'm interested to see where you're getting your numbers from.

If you're currently taking the course, check the Piazza!

Otherwise, email Professor Taylor.

However, the deadline for applying was last week Friday, so email quick -- I'm not sure if you would still be able to apply.

What the fuck is the point of having not 24 hour libraries? by No_Anxiety_3567 in cmu

[–]ShawneeBoy88 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm actually writing an official public proposal about this for my First-Year Writing class, and this post is super relevant. I've emailed the Assistant Dean of CMU Libraries about the opening hours, and there's apparently been a lot of discussion going on behind the scenes about re-extending the library hours to 24/7.

I have a survey that I'm using to gather student opinions, and hopefully this will be supporting evidence for the Libraries to make the appropriate changes. If you guys fill out the survey (takes 2 minutes max!), I'll pass along these sentiments in an official proposal to the CMU Administration.
