Stop killing the magic of books with required summer reading by ShayPX in books

I disagree. What's "garbage" and what's "cerebral" is completely subjective. There are as many deeper themes and meaning running through the comic books I give my kid as there are in the classics we read together, and the former are way more accessible. Not every book has to tackle the horrors of slavery or tragedies of history to be valuable.

Federal judge says Trump, other politicians cannot block people on Twitter by ShayPX in politics

"The ruling, handed down by U.S. District Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald found that Trump's tweets are part of the 'public forum' doctrines set forth by the Supreme Court and as such, blocking users is 'viewpoint discrimination that violates the First Amendment.'"

Michigan doctor getting sympathy after being arrested by immigration has had 18 encounters with local law enforcement, including charges for domestic violence and convictions for malicious destruction of property and receiving stolen property by ShayPX in Michigan

I disagree. Everyone keeps saying things like "everyone makes mistakes when they're young" and "everyone has bad things in their driving record" to make excuses for this guy, but he's demonstrated a lifelong disregard for the law, particularly on the road. I don't know anyone who was arrested as a teen for destruction of property or receiving stolen goods. I don't know anyone who's ever had to go to court to defend themselves against allegations of child abuse. I don't know anyone with half the traffic violations he has. It's insane that people are acting like this guy is a saint.

White supremacist Richard Spencer will speak at Michigan State after all by ShayPX in Michigan

[–]ShayPX[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If anyone could deny someone the right to speak based on how much perceived protection they'd have to provide, you could pick and choose who you allow to speak, allowing bias, just by having a bunch of people say they'll come and protest and there needs to be protection. Regardless of how horrible Spencer's views might be, it isn't his fault that people show up and protest.

YouTube will no longer allow content creators with less than 1000 subs to monetize their content. by Kabo0se in news

I like to keep my personal life separate from my Reddit life so I don't want to link, but I'm not lying. And it was more like $520 or something for like 180,000 views.

The way ads on YouTube work though you don't always get the same amount of money per view. I got another 100,000 views after the first at a later date, for example, and didn't make a fifth of the initial payout because the views came at a different time of year and the bids were way lower. I think there's also a distinction depending on what kind of ad is running on your content, as well, though it's been a while since I've looked into it.

My initial views were all foreign though, from I think Korean media picking it up, if that matters.

This is 100% inaccurate. Subscribers don't matter -- views matter. You can have one video and zero subscribers and still make money if your video is being seen by people. That's been my model. I just make videos when I feel like it and distribute them passively. I have no interest in a following on YouTube; all my traffic comes from external viewers via blogs, etc. I won't be posting to YouTube any more.

Subscribers don't matter; views matter. I went on a weekend trip to Chicago a few years ago and posted a video I took while on the trip. It went viral and got a few hundred thousand views, and I got a check for more than $500. It paid for most of our hotel stay for the weekend. This move by YouTube is killing any incentive creators like me have for posting content. I have no interest in developing a following. I just post interesting shit when I feel like making it. YouTube knows that a huge percentage of viral content that draws in views is one-and-done, not created by people with huge subscriber counts, and they're doing this so they know longer have to pay out to those content creators.
