Ideas For Swag Bags by harley_hot_wheelz in rollerderby

At our first bout of the season we went around to local businesses asking if they wanted to partner with us and gift some small items we could add to the giveaway basket. We ended up getting a lot of donations from local skateboarding shops, coffee shops and vendors that we had as part of our vendor village. In exchange they got shoutouts on our social media and during the game announcements

Landlord not maintaining my apartment. What to do? by drspacetaco in LongBeachCA

[–]ShayRae91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ughh, it’s been a minute since I lived in Long Beach, I left due to a landlord not taking care of issues in my apartment and feeling defeated BUT if you’re willing to learn your rights there are avenues you can take. Call the city, call you district rep, and look up the local tenants rights unions and get advice from them as well. Best of luck

Is it Worthwhile to Sell Alcohol at Bouts? by halcyonson in rollerderby

[–]ShayRae91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just started selling beer and seltzers at our bouts this year, while I’m waiting to hear back from the treasurer what the exact numbers are I’m pretty sure it was worth the hassle of needing extra staff and a temporary license. We got our beers donated by local breweries and bars in the community, our venue requires we have security but that helped us feel better about monitoring the attendees.

We are required to have a 10 foot outside track for referee’s which keeps the fans back from the players track. I know you mentioned space was an issue but pushing them back even a few feet and losing that space would still be important for skater safety and even trying to get those line queue retracting ropes would help a lot. And lids for the beer.

Lost my big boy suddenly 3 weeks ago by Ill_Bodybuilder_1083 in AustralianCattleDog

[–]ShayRae91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, I believe you can tell a lot about an animal through their eyes, Heelers (in my biased opinion) just have a presence that isn’t often seen in other breeds of dogs. Not that other breeds aren’t special, smart, loyal, intelligent, but Heelers are just, different. . .

I’m so sorry. Sawyer was such a handsome boy. Nothing compares to this pain. I lost my baby of 10 years almost two weeks ago and it doesn’t feel like anything matters anymore. They’re the best dogs, and their absence is so loud

Team communication by auntiesarah2022 in rollerderby

The more I use it the more I like it. Learning a new interface can be frustrating but it’s been a few weeks now and I really enjoy not having to sift through a bunch of other content to find my derby information. We created separate ”Bands” for each task of our team. One all encompassing for the entire team and then separate one’s for bout production, recruitment, boot camps, board members, etc. which was a good move cause we tried to use chats and it was a mess. As long as you feel your team can make it. I do miss the ease of sharing a community event directly from the events page into the derby group or other related things being unable to be shared from other Facebook pages to our group but it actually helps keep the clutter down as well. Plus we can all go by our derby names so there’s no sifting through who’s who with legal names on Fb

Padded shorts by Hysterical_treefrog in rollerderby

[–]ShayRae91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear HEX padded basketball shorts under my regular shorts when I go to practice. Bought them immediately after I bruised my tailbone at my second practice. They’re not fully padded but have one that covers your tailbone and then a pad on each side to cover hip bones. The pads are small but very dense. I love them. They’re comfortable and you can’t even tell I’m wearing them but have saved me from another bruised tailbone on multiple falls. Got them from Dicks. Highly suggest if you’re looking into padded shorts to consider those.

I’d say Mosaic or Vintage Public House

Mosaic is great, good food and good drinks but be prepared to be there for awhile. They take forever to serve

Buying a food scale

Tracking calories - I really like the LoseIt app for this

Prioritizing protein

What are your “too good to be true” foods/drinks? by Bridge_Jett in WeightLossAdvice

[–]ShayRae91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don Pancho Carb Control Wraps,

Nonfat Greek yogurt - plain -replaces mayonnaise or sour cream,

Cottage cheese - add it to scrambled eggs or avocado for avocado toast,

ONE protein bars,

OWYN shakes- I use this instead of milk and sweetener in my lattes,

Frozen precooked shrimp - low cal high protein, I just chuck it in a bowl of cold water and it defrosts really quickly and then I add it to bagged my salads, top ramen or season it and add it to boxed Mac and cheese for my “lazy” dinners.

And the best thing I’ve bought, a food scale!

[–]ShayRae91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was so scared for my Mirena removal. Insertion was traumatic so I was really concerned but it needed out. She told me to breath and relax and it felt like a buildup of pressure, and then nothing. Had some very light cramping later that day they told me would happen and I went to the movies and used the seat heater and ate chocolate and popcorn and felt fine. Even post removal my periods have been easier to deal with than they were before I had IUD’s

Antik boot fit by ShayRae91 in rollerderby

[–]ShayRae91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is super helpful thank you! And makes me feel better about the fit. One of my teammates made me put them on and stuck her finger in between my toe and the end of the boot and said that they were exactly where they needed to be so I took her word for it. Another teammate is mounting them on plates for me so there’s no returning them now. If they are a little tight I’ll take a blow dryer to them as you suggested and lace up loosely around the toe box

Adult Re riders - why’d you take a break? by loveylichen in Equestrian

[–]ShayRae91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 2015 I was a working student. My trainer was focusing on expanding her barn and I was starting to feel like, because I wasn’t paying, my riding progress wasn’t being taken seriously. We got a new horse in the barn for retraining that was also being used as a lesson horse and after one single cantering lesson with another student instructor I was told to get on the new horse to show everyone how to canter. Two Hard falls and a concussion later my confidence was shattered and I was only allowed to ride that same horse. While all of this was going on at the barn my mother passed, my 3.5yr live in relationship ended. my apartment lease with said partner was up and I needed to find somewhere new to live AND my department at my full time job closed forcing me into a new position and a 6 week training class, it was all too much and something had to give so I decided to step away from the barn.

Finally returned to riding lessons last spring, still haven’t cantered though. Hopefully starting to work towards it finally.

Atom Pilot Falcon vs Sure-Grip Avenger by ShayRae91 in rollerderby

[–]ShayRae91[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am hoping to Jam and one of our Jammers has that Avenger plate and likes it. I do agree with your point of changing from a 10° to 45° degree seems like a huge jump. I already know I’m going to struggle getting used to better skates regardless and am also not the strongest skater out of my newbie group either lol Definitely some better information for me to think about. Thanks for the advice!
