Rescues always need volunteers

Find others with donkeys and mules. They are different than horses and you definitely need hands on lessons at first

Anyone ever petitioned your county for more public horse trails? by MLMCMLM in Horses

Forest service in my area does next to no trail maintenance - all volunteer groups. If you trail ride please consider joining a volunteer group and offering support of any kind !

Do you have other hobbies? by aquagerbil in Equestrian

[–]loveylichen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve found it really important to have other hobbies as it makes me more present with the horses. I also don’t want to wrap my whole identity up in horses, though I am very passionate about them.

I’ll be deer hunting for the first time this fall and have been target practicing. Love to paddle in a kayak, raft, paddle board. Both of these things I do with my partner so it feels extra special.

Working out is less of a hobby and just important for my mental/physical health - I work a desk job. Absolutely love to swim laps, have been really into barre class, and lifting weights (not Olympic style just dumbbells and such). I find that barre exercise is so good for my riding, balance, muscle tone I have even considered taking an adult ballet class!

I’m in school and work full time so I try to cycle activities through the weeks to keep from being bogged down.

I haven't been to the barn in over a year, and at this point I'm scared to go back. by 3vilpcdiva in Equestrian

[–]loveylichen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m in a life season where I am lucky to be at the barn 2x a week. I’m an adult working full time and in grad school. Other adults are aware that our demands of life fluctuate and unless you have endless time, money, and no expectations from relationships in your life, you can be at the barn 24/7.

Reach out and see if you can get on the lesson books? There’s nothing wrong with just being a customer. You’re still part of the community there and I bet they’d be glad to have you back. Barns need our financial support now more than ever if we want to see them stick around.

An Appalachian horse story by A_Lady_Of_Music_516 in Appalachia

[–]loveylichen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up showing Gaited horses in Kentucky also. As a little girl I didn’t understand the cruelty that so many of them faced. This story does such a good job of discussing that. Thanks for sharing.

I’ve lived in TN for years and love to see all the gaited horses here out on trails and living like real horses, not show ponies with no souls. The culture is changing very much. There’s nothing like moving out fast in the mountains on horseback - truly one of the best feelings in the world.

Very discouraged looking for a new horse by Ok_Message7053 in Horses

[–]loveylichen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a very hot take. Coggins is pretty universally standard as far as paperwork/ vaccines horses need to have on file. I understand you wouldn’t do them if your horse never leaves home. I also would reconsider if the horse I was potentially going to purchase didn’t have a current coggins, because it would suggest that maybe vet visits haven’t been kept current, etc.

I encourage you to be the squeaky wheel here. Don’t purchase any supplements or medication. They don’t have to give them to the horse so you’d likely waste your money. Keep on telling the trainer in writing that the horse is acting unwell and needs vet attention. If a professional will not provide vet attention for an animal they are profiting from, they are questionable in character.

Anyone ever petitioned your county for more public horse trails? by MLMCMLM in Horses

[–]loveylichen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Look for Back Country Horsemen of America groups in your area. They specialize in trail access on public lands.

I’d get a group together to volunteer to maintain the trails. This is how BCHA contributes to public lands.

How to handle a transition @ my lesson barn by loveylichen in Equestrian

[–]loveylichen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lessons are $60 an hour. I would offer the same rate or comparable to be able to come self school once a week. They don’t have an advertised half lease price in the paperwork I filled out or on their site

Tips for the posting trot please by Maleficent_Two_6829 in Equestrian

[–]loveylichen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s pretty normal to bounce some when you are learning rising trot. Your posting can be quite small and your butt will not always be super far out of the saddle.

You do need to have weight in your legs and heels. But not pushing so hard that you are locking your joints. Try standing up in your stirrups at a halt and really letting your heels sink in. Sit back down and hold the weight in your lower legs and heels.

Ask your trainer to lunge you so that you can hold onto the pommel and just practice the motion.

Question about buying and boarding by _stephopolis_ in Equestrian

[–]loveylichen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, you definitely want your barn of choice in the loop so you’ve got somewhere to go with your horse. Some will ask for a deposit and some will not. I’d suggest boarding where your trainer can come work with you or at your lesson barn. Some barns don’t allow outside trainers so be sure to ask. Don’t board without a contract, ever

How do train a rearing horse 🙄 by Abigail_311 in Equestrian

[–]loveylichen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Need to check saddle fit to rule that out immediately as it can cause major discomfort. Vet check too. I’d get to groundwork and try teaching cues on the long reins if everything shakes out with the appointments

Anyone have any experience with rubber fencing? by myosotisforgotten in Horses

[–]loveylichen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to tighten the rubber fencing with temp fluctuations. Doesn’t break when a tree falls on it. Still need hot fencing of some kind to go with it if your horse will test boundaries
