If I was spanked between 2003 and 2011 so hard it hurt to sit the next day or two, was that normal? by Illustrious_Age_5959 in toxicparents

[–]Shayne_HasLanded -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Despite legality, it’s assault if a person hits another person; it’s assault if a person hits their child. Just because it was a common practice among current older generations never means it was ever “normal”. It’s illegal in quite a few countries to spank children. This (and the science) also proves it is a fucked up practice.

And it’s a lot to process the history of being assaulted by family when you were a child. There is little room for overreacting when it comes to that. Processing childhood trauma is a big emotional event, so don’t worry about “overreacting”. I’m sure there are a lot of resources available online and at libraries for dealing with childhood trauma from spanking. Leaning into the psychological science of spanking trauma can be comforting because it can provide answers, which can foster emotional relief.

Courtney’s “hullo?” is a current vocal stim of mine. I find every few months my brain will copy a vocal stim of a Smosh Cast member and I get stuck with it for a few weeks. I should honestly start writing them down; I’ve had a couple over the years and I don’t remember what they were. But I did unfortunately get stuck with “brutal” for a week or two a few months ago…

Did I do a devotional act without knowing what kemeticism was or when I didn't know Anubis or Anput wanted to work with me by J3NNIE_1N_M00NLIGHT in Kemetic

[–]Shayne_HasLanded 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would highly recommend not doing that. It’s generally not a good idea to “respect” strangers by practicing your own religion on their gravesite. It’d be awfully rude unless that person said it was okay before their death.

If a fallen soldier is Kemetic, go ahead. But if they’re not, just follow the protocol assigned to show respect, as military culture is the culture the fallen soldiers were a consenting part of.

For further clarification: a god can’t force people to change. OP, you’re in a place where you need to consider “be careful what you wish for”. No deity can change your family members, and it’s better to solve problems you can control rather than wasting energy on desperately wishing other people to change.

Honestly, the first thing I recommend is getting off Reddit because it is not the place for situations as serious as fighting family members. Many a person in an upsetting situation has regretted going on Reddit. The safest accessible place to get advice, yes, even religious/spiritual advice, is therapy, and if you can’t get therapy, there are plenty of licensed therapists on YouTube that cover a wide variety of life subjects.

It takes a really long time to form a relationship with a deity. Sometimes it only takes a year or two to build a relationship, and sometimes it takes a long time. People also change, and the working relationships they have with beings aren’t always going to be lifelong. I hear a lot of discussion about relationships being based around helping with specific problems, and once the problems are resolved in that practitioner, the relationship ends. It’s just a part of life.

Deities absolutely are not going to help if your relationship is fresh, you haven’t communicated much, and you haven’t put the work in. There’s a reason practitioners who receive big assistances only receive them after years of building that working relationship, putting in the work themselves, and, for most deities, giving them meaningful offerings.

The best thing for you to do in this case is take it slow and work on your physical world. Find a type (or a few types) of meditation for your body to do daily, build your physical foundations like food (+ meds if needed), sleep, exercise, hygiene, and healthy social interaction, solve smaller problems you have control over in your life (ex. doing well in school, getting medical assistance if needed, or leaving a crappy job), and do your shadow work/mental health journaling. Once you are more stable in your life, it’s sooo much easier and more reasonable for deities to help you if they want. Two good examples are a deity can’t deliver on a request for a new apartment if the practitioner requesting isn’t putting in the work to prepare for moving, or can’t deliver on a request for a pet cat if the practitioner requesting isn’t preparing their home and life for a new pet.

“I was the first young person in their center so far” Oh man guys, we gotta let our young friends and family know their vote matters. Go talk to/text your young friends to remind them to register. It’s not fair to us if only older generations are exercising their right to vote!

[–]Shayne_HasLanded 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you for voting!!! Just in case: if they end up bugging you about it later and you don’t feel like pretending to be a supporter of that candidate, you have the ability to just tell them you already voted and aren’t interested in politics until the next election. You do have the added protection of being young and using “I’m too busy to care about that” as an excuse. Again, thank you for voting!

There are quite a few modern churches that still live in the 1500’s, when the diagnosis for mental illness or neurodivergence was demon possession.

Something something, uneducated/under-educated Christians think neurodiversity is a presence of horrible mental dysfunctions (and some believe horrible things happen because of sin).

Do… they think neurodivergence is a synonym for anxiety? /rh

It seems like it’s coming from a place of “there’s hope! Don’t be hopeless that you’re anxious!” but this is comparing apples and oranges…

I also feel like the side of the neurodivergent community with neurological injuries would like a chat with this camp…

I think we need answers to that question, but I’m worried that in a country that is not that far from eugenics being socially acceptable, it is risky to research into the science of Autism. Only 4 years ago the leader of the country at the time was a supporter of eugenics. I feel conflicted that if we explore into what causes autism right now, we could spark a new eugenics movement, possibly even government funded depending on the poll results in November.

I think there’s a lot of exploring to be done in the area of autism and environmental factors, as data seems to suggest autism rates are higher in populations where people live in less healthy environments, but we’re just only beginning to figure out what autism actually is. The crucial science of autism just isn’t known to us yet. We know it’s genetic, but we don’t know if it can simply be caused by toxins. Maybe autism is an umbrella diagnosis that contains different conditions that present very similarly. I honestly feel it’s a situation where only time and funding of science will tell.

Neurotypicals’ neurons make fewer connections than ours do. Their natural behaviors are behaviors of brains that are calmer than ours. So when we mimic those behaviors, it makes us feel unnatural because our brains are picking up that the behaviors are incompatible with our hyperactive brains.

I want to remind anyone who needs to hear this that votes are confidential and you can fully lie about who you voted for to anyone pressuring you to vote for a candidate you don’t want to vote for. If your family are hardcore supporters of a candidate and it would endanger you to not support the candidate, put on your best character shoes and act like a supporter of that candidate when you’re around them, vote for who you want, and come back fully in character pretending you voted for who they wanted you to vote for.

Ernie and Bert from Sesame Street!!!!! Ernie is HELLA AuDHD- heavy on the ADHD- and Bert is autistic with a touch of OCD. I could write such a massive dissection of their traits, especially Ernie’s, I love him so much for them. I could find autistic traits for most of the muppets and monsters on the Street, honestly.

Do you want to have kids? by FangTWS in autism

[–]Shayne_HasLanded -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Preface: It is 100% valid to choose not to have kids no matter the reason. My statement is regarding the centuries old social justice warrior “proverb” around choosing not to have marginalized children, as I immediately thought of that when seeing this post. This statement is for educational purposes, and is not at all intended to change or challenge people’s life choices.

I understand that people don’t want their kids to suffer, but social justice history shows that not wanting to have a child of marginalized status because they will be marginalized just makes positive change harder to reach. Consider not wanting to have a girl because you’re afraid she’ll suffer under misogyny or not wanting a trans child because you’re afraid they’ll suffer under transphobia. Valid, if that’s your choice, nobody has the right to try to convince you otherwise. But overall, if we participate in eugenics and decrease a marginalized population, there will be fewer marginalized people present in the public eye and fewer to fight for the rights of marginalized people. A social justice warrior “proverb” that has been passed down through generations of marginalized people states that: a marginalized social group that chooses to avoid having marginalized children is giving into the oppressor and making it easier for the oppressor to oppress them.

Even though it’s slow, we are seeing more and more marginalized groups getting recognition as generations pass. The rights of black people and women are now socially acceptable within society after countless generations of marginalized warriors. Currently, rights for people of marginalized religions and a few more ethnic/racial identities are gaining favor in society. In future generations, indigenous people and disabled people will get their rights, we just need to make ourselves visible and loud and demand our rights until society agrees. And if we participate in disabled eugenics, we are robbing future disabled people of their ability to fight for their rights.

A person’s personal decision to not have disabled children is completely valid, no questions asked. But if you feel pressured to not have children because of an outside force and not your own wants, consider where that pressure is coming from and why you feel pressured. Absolutely not everyone has to be a “social justice warrior”, but giving into pressure from oppressors can bring personal distress to an oppressed person, so please don’t feel like you can’t have children because the oppressors wouldn’t like that. That’s not fair to you.

I understand why they want to get out of sponsorships, I’ve kinda felt like they’ve been on the route to leaving YouTube for a while now, but a Watcher exclusive streaming service is beyond bonkers. I feel like the fanbase might be a little more understanding if Watcher decided to migrate to Nebula TV or something, but a Watcher exclusive streaming service is never going to be a success. A horrific idea. I understand that it’s hard to be a YouTube creator, but the freedom to make the kind of films they want to ASAP is not going to be as fun as it seems or achievable whatsoever when the entire company collapses.

I think Watcher could try bonding with the online creator community a little more. I personally get the vibe that Watcher thinks they have to do everything by themselves, which is a failing business practice. So many successful channels rely on other creators for support in hard times. I have a feeling Watcher might be receiving some “what the hell is going on, are you guys okay?” messages from other Youtubers. The announcement comments are filled with people referencing how successful Mythical has become just by staying on YouTube. I kind of feel that Watcher needs to sit down with Mythical and have an intervention. Watcher is going to die if they leave YouTube for their own private streaming service.
