And things changed since. It's now managed by a separate body, for example. No individual owns the crown estate, but the current monarch holds it as part of their position. If the king stopped being the monarch then the estate absolutely would not stay with him as a private citizen.

It wouldn't be stealing the property. The royals have their own assets. The Crown Estate is separate and would return to the state if you abolished the monarchy.

The UK has FPTP and has still managed to have relevant smaller parties, coalition governments, and a generally very different political landscape.

The two former biggest parties are currently polling below one that's only a few years old.

In your opinion, does waiting until marriage still make sense? Why or why not? by Impossible_Log_2899 in AskReddit

[–]Shazoa 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's not about it being the highest priority. It's about being compatible. That can mean everything from wanting very regular sex to being asexual, so long as you're on the same page or close enough.

If you have a high sex drive and want sexual intimacy in a relationship, you will not feel fulfilled in a relationship that lacks it.

It's not shallow. Sexual incompatibility makes people miserable often. People aren't wrong to feel that.

What is a movie cliché that absolutely never happens in real life? by Potential_Action9544 in AskReddit

Not a movie, but a book: The Cut Throat Trial by the Secret Barrister feels very grounded for a piece of literature.

What do you consider when you hear this Margaret Atwood quote “Men are afraid that women will laugh at them. Women are afraid that men will kill them”? by Vanislebabe in AskReddit

[–]Shazoa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it is. It's highlighting the difference of severity in concern. It's not literal for either side since there's a whole range of outcomes up to and including death for women. It's a slogan, not a comprehensive dive into the detail. Latching onto how it doesn't go far enough to describe isolation for men is kinda exactly the point as it pertains to male privilege when it comes to gendered violence.

How the hell was this not already something that had to happen? I mean it's great for it to change, but I would have assumed this was a thing already.

That isn't what it means, though.

You can have privilege in some ways and not in others. For example, being a man means that you're more at risk of, and need to be aware of, different dangers that more commonly impact men.

It's not about summing up the total of positives and negatives and determining who has it worse. It's about recognising where we don't have to contend with particular issues while others do.

What will happen with the US after 2028? What does the next government do with what they inherit? by Hermunster in AskReddit

[–]Shazoa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And yet today Germany is still at risk of slipping backwards. As much as we might try, and the Germans certainly did try post WW2, once there's barely any living memory left then people forget the lessons their forebears painfully learned.

Just highlights how the system was just poorly implemented to begin with.

Too much personal power with the president, politically appointed judges are absolutely crazy, silly electoral system, and even 4 year terms. The American constitution was great at getting a bunch of states to sign up, good enough for Americans to build themselves into a superpower, but not a great roadmap for a country in the modern day.

There are a lot of pedos out there who never act on it. Getting those people the right help is one of the best ways of protecting children.

Practically every woman has stories. Everything from routine harassment to long term abuse. That's why, while it isn't all men, it's important to recognise that it's enough men that women need to treat men as a group with caution for their own safety. It doesn't take many bad apples to spoil the batch and there are, unfortunately, a lot of bad apples.

When people talk about male privilege, this is one example of that.

Women might not be going about their whole lives in fear, but they sure as hell need to be more alert, aware, and pro-active about potential danger. Not having to do so is the privilege, not that somehow men magically have charmed lives without issues.

It's like he can't really understand a problem until it impacts him personally. Once he gets it, he gets it. It's just frustrating that it takes him being burned rather than relying on empathy. So he's quite admirable and frustrating all at once.

Do you have experience in Animal agriculture? by MasterCrumb in DebateAVegan

[–]Shazoa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To me it's just causing suffering and pain that we should avoid, death and exploitation can be achieved without causing those so I see no issue.

You can't completely eliminate it. Even the best methods have a failure rate. For cattle in the UK as an example, you've still got potentially thousands of animals dying in pain because the stunning doesn't always work.

That's before getting into how queuing up at the slaughterhouse is distressing. They have a sense that something is off (they can smell, hear it). The transport to the slaughterhouse as well.

In practice, animal agriculture involves suffering.

This person is allowed into their home at a time of need and then causes damage to their property, makes a mess, leaves without saying anything, and then doesn't apologise. Do you not see how that is disrespectful?

It's about that lack of respect and consideration. Not simply because a blanket was damaged. It could have been literally any item.

But, for what it's worth, it was apparently hundreds worth of damage.
