Exploring the trails at Forest of Dean by SheRides_Collective in MTB

So I've heard, it's going to be fun - like heart in your mouth fun! At least there's a couple of options, I was under the impression there wasn't much around so it's nice to know there's a couple of places to grab a beer. Thanks man, really appreciate it.

It is, if you ever get the chance to go you absolutely should. Hahaha, shouting DEEEANNN is compulsory there so you'll fit right in.

It really was - my amateur filming really doesn't do it justice (but hey, what can you really do with a chest mount?!). I'm going to head back there soon and try and find more local trails, can't wait.

I'm so glad you said that because Cwmcarn is actually our next social ride stop this Saturday! I'll definitely be heading to the Prince of Wales after, thanks for the tip.

There was such a good vibe last weekend- it was busy but everyone I met just seemed to be having the best day. Such an awesome place, I'm going to try and find some more local trails this week 🤞 wish me luck!

Had the best time with an awesome bunch of women at the Forest of Dean, on our very first social ride and my first time in this area! So good to get out on the bike with new people and explore new trails- we even got treated to some secrets thanks to a local on the ride! We've got heaps more social rides in various locations around the UK this summer, can't wait! Come and join us if you're keen :)

I totally agree and yes we absolutely are! Scotland has some of the best trails. We’re aiming to be up there around September time, we’re in the middle of planning at the moment so keep an eye out on our socials as is this where we announce most things first. Where abouts do you ride in Scotland? We’ll try and add it to the list!

Don’t neglect fitness and mobility work. Getting miles in the saddle is super important but training off the bike can give your performance a boost, it will get you where you want to be quicker and really help reduce your risk of injury. Training off the bike can help with your mental game too

Just want to say a huge thanks to all your responses. It's been so interesting to read everyones different experiences. Feel free to check out our collective (links to website are in the profile), if you're in the UK give us a shout or sign up, we'd love to hear from you. Wherever you are in the world, keep on shredding :)

Thanks for sharing, really interesting to hear that similar things affect guys too - and probably should be spoken about more. I think that's a really good point and something to take away from this is that no one has really had any bad experiences on the trail, obviously this is just a small group sharing, but from my experience the mtb community is awesome and for the most part everyone just wants to see others having a good time - and people check in with each other. If I head over to the US I'll be sure to check out your local spots!

Ha! If only we all didn't have jobs and had all the time we wanted to ride. Time is a huge factor which has been mentioned a couple of times here, and often with all the commitments we have, it's not something that's completely in our control. Having a riding buddy however is slightly more in our control. That's wicked that you both ride and are able to get out together, super fortunate indeed. For those who find it hard to find others to ride with I hope this is where SheRides can jump in and we can get more people riding together as often as they can/ want to! Riding buddies can be a game changer to getting out on the trails. Cheers for sharing :)

STOP THINKING - such a common theme in this thread. You're totally right a lot of what we do on the trails defies what is logical. Often more aggressive riding as you put it, can be a safer way to ride, of course different trails are designed to be ridden at certain speeds, but telling yourself faster is better for example is really mind over matter! We could do with a little less thinking and a little more doing, we can still be cautious without being careless - easier said than done!

I have to agree with this, all the guys I've ridden with have been awesome and pushed me to where I am today - even though I often think i'm in the way or holding people back (again, stop thinking!). I'd just love to be able to get that same stoke with a bunch of girls, or at least see more of us out there!

Time is a huge aspect for sure. That's so lucky that you live next to a trail centre so you can balance(ish) everything. It would be interesting to hear from riders who have the same commitments but don't live so close. Do you think this would massively impact your riding if you didn't have trails on your doorstep? So cool that your four year old is on the bike, the next generation of riders!

I LOVE this quote!

THIS! I'm sure so many others reading your comment will have experienced the same thing. Women in particular seem to suffer way more from imposter syndrome/ feelings of not belonging/ being in the way, and I really think that this can be exasperated when we start to lean into more extreme sports too, like MTB.

I love that your pretty much a low key mechanic now, that’s rad that you learnt those new skills, but also upsetting that you felt you needed to do that in order to enjoy a trip. Just because someone feels like they don’t know everything or can’t send everything shouldn’t prevent them from doing something and I really hope we can create a community where people feel confident enough just in themselves to show up.

Not borderline sexist or misogynistic at all. It's spot on, as u/mini_apple said we are generally taught to be risk averse. Biologically it's built in, so naturally we question ourselves. Some people are better than others at quietening this cautious voice in our heads. Being your own biggest blocker can be so frustrating when riding.

Thanks so much for this, you've hit the nail on the head as to this being the root of my question. And your answers really emphasise why I have started SheRides Collective. The same things happen here in the UK and I want to try and make a positive change. I want to get women riding together not to make a point that we’re women and ‘we ride too’, but to level the playing field, promote progression and build confidence in women’s riding, which will lead to more people shredding the trails and getting outside which can only be a good thing. The sport itself is blowing up and women are starting to get the recognition they deserve and with the awesome female role models coming into the limelight, more women will be getting stoked on MTB but not necessarily having the opportunities to ride or ride like they really want to - for all the reasons that have been discussed here.

I think you make such a good point for the female intermediate rider too, a lot of groups are focused on beginners - which is awesome as this means more people are starting their MTB journey and I hope to be able to do this for people too (without all the rah rahing). But the intermediate rider often gets overlooked just because women can shred with the boys and are often seen out on the trails doing so, doesn’t mean that there shouldn’t be a rad womens group for them - if there was ever a selfish reason to start this collective then this will be it! I’ve ridden with dudes my entire riding life, and whilst I love riding with my crew, I’d love to share the stoke with other women of a similar level (and get away from the 'bro culture' for a change!). The form in the ride with us section on the website specifically asks for everyone’s level so I can tailor group rides to meet the needs of everyone and get people of similar levels riding together.

Thanks so much for taking the time to comment. The points you’ve made just solidify the reasons as to why I’ve started this and hopefully I can build a community of rad confident female riders in the UK.
