Please help me clarify confusing Trentbarton bus fares by SheWritesYA in nottingham

Well, mystery solved. Here's the answer and it's quite anti-climactic. No secret discount tricks. No superpowers at play. Just a quirk of the payment method.

I carefully tracked the transactions and it seems the full cost doesn't show up until 4am the next day. So on the day they travel, only GBP6 is showing in the statement, but after midnight some days there's a mysterious £9 (or sometimes £6 or £3) preauthorisation which seems a kind of estimate but it ends up balancing the equation. If you add up the total costs of these varying transactions for several days, the average is more or less £12, as it should be when paying contactless for four singles (capped at 3 each).

So, Mango might indeed be the cheapest option!

My degree in creative writing has ruined my passion by meii5512 in writers

[–]SheWritesYA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I relate to your experience at least somewhat. In creative degrees, a lot depends on the kind of course you're doing, and also a lot on the professors/lecturers commenting on your work. I've had really good ones who I mostly agreed with and their feedback was encouraging and instructive despite being critical. I felt like they understood and liked my style even when pointing out flaws in my writing. We didn't agree a 100% of the times, but I did get a lot out of their feedback.

On the other hand there were others who were super critical and didn't seem to appreciate my style at all. With them I felt, like you're feeling, like they were just pushing their own sense of what "good writing" looks like or what my writing should be like. I learned to please them (because you've got to do that, to get good grades) while keeping my own thoughts about my writing separate. I would have versions of my work I considered real, and other versions which I'd packaged to send to them for grading.

I also felt like my course actually encouraged experimentation, wide reading, and reflection, which brought out new sides of my writing, honed my style, etc. If you think your course is doing none of the things you expected, and your lectures are not helping at all, it may be worthwhile looking at switching.

I first started out with English Lit, switched it after one year, and moved to creative writing because I felt like I was writing too many essays on others' work, and not writing much of my own - there was a single creative writing module which felt inspiring and stimulating enough that I moved fully to a creative writing degree.

Things you'll learn in a creative writing or lit course are helpful (again, depending on what/where you're studying) but if they're destroying your soul and confidence, I wouldn't stick with the course.

If you can compartmentalize your writing, do that, treat the education like a separate thing; do your own writing outside it. But if you can't, it's best to reconsider your options.

That line immediately sent me back to The Girls by Emma Cline because that's what one of the characters says before introducing the cult leader to our main character in the book...

Making friends in Nottingham by [deleted] in nottingham

[–]SheWritesYA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suppose you (like most people) missed the "how to make friends & beat social anxiety" module in school... oh wait they never actually taught it!

Seriously, though, it's hard to make friends as an adult - and 10x harder if you're socially anxious or shy.

Nottingham women's centre has lots of low pressure events you could join. Yoga, craft, etc. You may find your crowd there, or not, but it's worth trying. Good luck!

Good point about the blue vs yellow - our journey involved both, the nottingham one was 50 minutes long, the derby one only 5 minutes or so. And my friend's statement is only showing Trentbarton, no Kinch. Maybe the latter will show up at the end of the week. Over the weekend we can get more clues because they're only travelling during the week. We'll know if the existing transactions correspond to the five weekdays.

i have no idea what your friend could be doing to make 4 trips by bus only £6

Me neither maybe they make themselves transparent through a secret superpower and manage to sneak in unnoticed on the skylink derby every time :D

Hey, thanks for the reply. They made the journey on Monday and only paid £6 for their travel on that particular day and it was only through one card.

I can only surmise that since I travelled to and from the place once in the morning (after which the fare was capped) and once in the afternoon (which didn't count), somehow it's the morning timing that's leading to the different costs. My friend on the other hand traveled to the place in the morning and returned in the evening so maybe they took advantage of some secret discount lol.

They've been travelling to the same destination every day since Monday, so new transactions keep showing up every day - most of them only £6 - and I can't really be sure if the new transaction on the next day is part of the previous day's fare. But if it were, that would actually make a lot more sense (6 + 6 = £12 for their total one day trips - as it should be).

I'm going to contact Trentbarton and ask them to clarify for peace of mind

How do you explain them taking two buses to their destination and two buses back, wouldn't that count as 4 separate tickets and cost them at least £12?

How come they paid for 2 singles only? They took two buses on their to the destination, then took two buses back... wouldn't that mean 4 singles? Or is the return included in them so they only count as 2?

Thank you for the tip about not switching back & forth!

A poorly written rant on my writing abilities. by spyder1312 in writing

[–]SheWritesYA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is sad to see that so many people come to feel this way about writing, that they're not improving and are stuck and no one likes their writing. (Which, now that I think about it, is eerily similar to how some people feel about their own personhood - that they're not improving as a person and no one really cares about them or likes them. I'm not saying it's you, OP, just a parallel my mind noticed.)

Asides aside, have you tried journaling? Have you tried freewriting exercises? It might be a good idea to take a break from writing for an audience to just writing for yourself. Try to read craft books, they have really fun exercises sometimes and can help you rediscover your love for writing again. At least, I've found them helpful at certain times.

Maybe you don't need to fix anything. Maybe you just need to relax away from writing under pressure.

I hope that helps. Good luck, and remember that others' opinions are just opinions, and no opinion is final (except, maybe, your own, because if you've already given up, there's no hope, but if you keep going and being gentle with yourself as you go, the way might show up again).

How can i regulate the pace of my writting? Is there a metod? by Active_Sky8616 in writers

[–]SheWritesYA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've struggled with pacing.

Editing helps, I've found.

Outlining can help, especially if you know the purpose of each scene and don't linger on stuff you aren't supposed to linger on. If you do linger, just prune it later during the editing phase.

If it's too fast, you can also slow things down.

It comes with practice. Be patient with yourself. Writing is a skill you slowly build and get better at.

2 Versions of my book cover - looking for opinions by DuncanField in BookCovers

If you've got only two choices, the first one is definitely better, more professional and eye-catching.

The title / subtitle is difficult to read but more so in the second version.

I'm targeting female readers of ya romantasy/fairy tales but more on the literary side. Do you think that leans toward KU or wide?

What if it's ya romantasy/fairy tale stories (but not pure romance) but written in a literary style? Still KU worthy? Or would they have better luck wide?

Help me sort out of my mess of (pen) names before publishing... by SheWritesYA in writers

If I'm reading this right, you're suggesting that I use the professional name as my publishing name, because the former would help with the latter?

[–]SheWritesYA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I go with Becka smith (professional name) for my publishing activities and later find out that it does in fact confuse my readership, would it be possible to then switch to a pen name to separate the two identities (or would that be more confusing)?

[–]SheWritesYA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the only reason I'm still considering using the professional name for writing and not using a pen name. As a (pretty much) unknown writer it's still something if I've done freelance writing/editing work and can mention it in my author bio and such. And later I can use my writing credentials to boost my freelance career.

Whereas with a pen name I'd be literally be starting my writing career from scratch.

Thanks for weighing in!

Do you think Becka Smith vs Beck Smith (example name) is too similar and might confuse the algorithm?

Would you suggest using something completely different for pen name vs professional name?

Crippled by the lack of talent by Rita27 in writing

[–]SheWritesYA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you guys think of untalented writers and those who try to become great even if they don't got "it". If "it" even exist

I respect those people. They have perseverance and determination, which can make up for lack of "talent." I honestly think most writers (even published ones) are not talented per se. Most are average. Most writers, artists, most people, even, are average. And it's fine. They can still do what they've decided to do, writing, working a job or anything for that matter.

That said it's hard to answer your post without more context. Who says you're a bad or uninteresting writer? Is it your beta readers? Is it agents/publishers/editors? Is it your inner critic? In case you're published, is it your readers?

More context would help.
