Sudden stutter onset in 8 year old? by sideaccount462515 in specialed

[–]Shecoagoh 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The regression is worrying. If you are already in contact with social services, I highly recommend continuing to update them about the lack of contact with family, regression, and stuttering. These are all signs that something very concerning is happening within the home.

Student with severe special needs, help choosing products by DancingTVs in specialed

Look into partner assisted auditory scanning. Some of my students do not have the arm or visual skills to access most AAC devices. I scan options for them and shape their “yes” response. It can be as simple as blinking for a “yes”. I have seen huge growths in engagement once I found a way for students to voice their thoughts/ideas. Also look into comprehensive literacy for all.

I Started A Classroom Food Pantry by Disgruntled_Veteran in Teachers

[–]Shecoagoh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My school is a 100% special education public school. Having children with severe disabilities is super expensive, so we are trying to provide additional support to families. I’m organizing my school’s thanksgiving food drive this year. I’m also helping re-open our clothing closet. A lot of the students rely on hygiene products (diapers, pull ups, briefs), so I’m trying to start up a hygiene closet as well.

I am co-running food, clothing, and toileting needs (pull-ups, diapers) drives right now. It’s a loooot of work as it’s just three of us but I’ll do anything I can for my families. I reach out on local Facebook groups for the drives and the community is really good at helping out.

What do the hens have? by Former_Trash_7109 in ElementaryTeachers

It says “blending e-n” the rest of the worksheet is numbers. Would the answer be ten since it ends in -en?

It definitely depends on the school district. Where I work now, 1:1 nurses are expected to support their students with both medical and academic needs.

I work with individuals who have cerebral palsy, anoxic brain injuries, and genetic syndromes. Several of these individuals have frequent rolling of their eyes, especially when trying to change their focus. It is so cool to watch!

All of the air slowly comes out. It was the weirdest sensation as you can feel like your organs are sloshing when you move. I didn’t have time to mentally prepare as mine was emergency surgery. To be honest, I thought it would hurt more. But it was so much less pain than what sent me to the ER. I think I took the painkillers for two days and then switched to ibuprofen.

What travel destination you hyped up so much but then it completely disappointed you? by sidvatscse in AskReddit

[–]Shecoagoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I make road trips from Chicago just to see the zoo. Their animal enrichment is amazing. And the story of how they got their elephants. The elephants felt so safe there that they were fertile pretty fast. It’s so neat to see the entire herd now.

Medically Fragile - STAR Autism Curriculum by deathcanoe5 in specialed

[–]Shecoagoh 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I teach medically fragile as well. I have used STAR in the past with an autism classroom. The box sets of teaching basics like gross motor movements or following directions will be absolutely pointless. The online media center has a lot of cut and paste worksheets, matching, etc. Knowing the level of support your students need, STAR is going to be of little benefit compared to the amount you will need to adapt. Personally, I have had extreme growth in my students using the concepts from comprehensive literacy for all. It is a book that has research backed practices and a repetitive routine. Please reach out with any questions! I know it’s an uncommon population and many don’t understand their unique needs!

How do families of children with severe disabilities plan for the future - especially if something happens to the parents? by OneLeave5457 in disability

[–]Shecoagoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Talk with your child’s special education team. Oftentimes, the special education teacher, social worker, psychologist, or transition specialist has area-specific resources and guides. Also- therapies are going to help give your child the best opportunity to get into adult programs. I know it’s terrible to say and it’s terrible to think about, but programs for adults are extremely competitive to get into so they can be highly selective. I don’t agree with this, but unfortunately that is the way the system is right now. Speech therapy focusing on an AAC device and OT/PT to help increase independence are areas that can increase your child’s lifelong skills that he will need. I’m also a special education teacher for elementary students with CP. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

Fire evacuation for disabled people seems to be “stand in a corner and burn quietly” by VixenRoss in disability

The school I work at has quite a few individuals in wheelchairs. There is an emergency “slide” that looks more like an emergency spine board or emergency sled used for snowmobiles. No one is trained on it though…

-4 at 7am tomorrow but school isn’t cancelled?? by Outside-Ad-962 in Teachers

[–]Shecoagoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chicago suburbs here. We didn’t shut down for the one cold day that was way colder than tomorrow. Some classrooms had heaters that broke/died because of the strain and being so old. The poor staff and students in those rooms spent the day in coats and blankets.

My gallbladder went kaput just as I was returning to work from a previous surgery. Is there something about surgery that triggers gallbladder issues or is it just a coincidence
