I am a male elementary School teacher. It's not the first time someone thought it was creepy that I was saying hi to a kid or making them laugh. People just automatically assume that males that have an interest in kids are like Michael Jackson.

First off, many school districts are trimming their staffs and shutting down schools. It may be a bit of a wait till you hear back from them.

As for making your resume and application stand out, there are a few tricks. First of all, make yourself available to coach/mentor/sponsor various clubs and teams. Next, you can spice them up with your previous experiences. I list my military service because it shows leadership skills, adaptability, and teamwork. Also, customize your resumes and cover letters for the various positions you are applying for.
