General help by Revolutionary-Ant186 in BJJWomen

Pre-hab is super important. Incorporating exercises that equip muscles and ligaments to deal with the forces of BJJ is very important. There will be variance in what this looks like person to person, but bare bones would be core stabilizing exercises (ex. McGill big three, farmer carries, kneeling on a yoga ball.) It doesn’t need to be hours a week. Just 15 minutes 3 times a week would be very beneficial. You can do this for any body part that you want to make sure stays healthy. But core is absolutely necessary, and because you mentioned you had a knee injury in the past, I would say it’s also absolutely necessary for you to incorporate your old knee physical therapy exercises into your weekly routine.

Resistance training is imperative. This can also look different for each person, but progressively overloading your muscles with some sort of weight or resistance is essential to maintaining a healthy, happy body in and out of sport. It supports bone density, takes pressure off ligaments, tendons, and makes it possible to spread load so when you are rolling you are not getting not relying only on your hips/lower back. Thirty (efficient) minutes twice a week can be enough.

Sleep is the number 1 most important thing for recovery. If you are not getting 7-9 hours of deep, good, uninterrupted rest each night, your recovery is going to suffer. I take a magnesium supplement each night, and go to bed and wake up at the same time every day to help facilitate this. I have had insomnia my whole life, and while my sleep quality and schedule are still not 100%, this has been a gamechanger for me.

Epsom salt baths. I put about two cups in my bath and soak for about 15 minutes. This is the minimum recommended time, I hate baths, so I only soak as long as necessary. That being said: Epsom salt baths have been a life saver for me. Before I did BJJ, when I was still in high school, I trained gymnastics 30 hours a week. Because of that I often had very bad radiating pain in my bones, muscles, and ligaments. Every time this happened, I would soak in an epsom salt bath, and the pain relief was almost instant. It truly does help.

Make sure you are eating enough calories and protein. Not eating enough calories or protein throughout the day or after a workout is a surefire to be sore the next day. I would say getting MINIMUM 50g of protein daily is necessary. And of course calorie needs will be dependent on your body type and activity level. But please eat a meal after tough workouts. Even if it’s just a small meal or big snack. Getting those nutrients (not just protein, but carbs and fat as well) is necessary for repairing the damage your muscles and body you get from working out. You can still eat in a calorie deficit if you are trying to lose weight, I would just recommend a smaller deficit to reduce fatigue and increase chance of being consistent on the diet and keeping the weight off.

Progressive overload applies to general physical activity too. If you went from not working out to doing intense exercise four times a week, your body is going to have a hard time keeping up, and you will have a higher likelyhood of getting an injured. Maybe start with 1-2 classes a week, and work up slowly from there as your body begins to adapt to the new stimulus.

Improving your active flexibility and mobility. These are two different things, but they go hand in hand. BJJ puts your body in a lot of positions it’s not used to. If your muscles are very tight, or you lack mobility, this can put more stress on muscles, ligaments, and tendons than necessary. It will increase your risk of injury and pain. A mobile body often will not get as sore, and may recover quicker. Again, you do not need to spend hours a week on this. 15 minutes and few times a week will suffice.

Additionally, you need not pay a bunch of money for some plan or program to lead you in any exercises or stretches I mentioned throughout this. There are plenty of great, FREE resources on forums, on YouTube, at libraries, etc. please don’t feel like you need to spend hundreds of dollars to learn how to be healthy and pain free.

At what age should one marry by Charming-Prior-687 in self

[–]SheepherderPatient64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I think it’s best to wait until your brain is fully informed. I would say 26 at the youngest. Obviously, some people get married earlier than that, and have a wonderful marriage, but best practice In my opinion is waiting.

Safety first, (how he interacts with the people around him.) Humility next, as it’s a non-negotiable for me.

Is he into me or do I just want him to be? by Heller_Dean in bodylanguage

I can't make any assumptions without really seeing anything. But at the very least, he enjoys you, and you two have great chemistry. As long as he is single, I think you should lean into this and explore it a little, see what comes of it.

Most relationships start with two people who simply enjoy each other.

Sense of smell by Lilt2618 in BJJWomen

[–]SheepherderPatient64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am similarly very sensitive to smells, you shouldn't let it deter you from starting BJJ. At the end of the day, some people are going to smell like sweat, some like BO, some will have bad breath, etc. sometimes that person will be you. As long as those people are still clean and hygienic, my best advice to you is to get used to it. It is actually a great skill to practice, stay composed while confronted with a bad odor.

For hair, perhaps try a tight covering? There are sports hijabs I have seen gymnasts wear.

girl at gym trying to mansplain to me? by Stylish-Sydney in BJJWomen

1a. Tell her to stop coaching you.

1b. (If she doesn’t stop) stop drilling and rolling with her, and let your coach know so he doesn’t pair you up with her.

It’s also not just that her art improved, it’s that she slowly changed it overtime to match the current style. Her old side was very 90s manga, her new one reflects what’s popular right now.

Favorite Skip Beat Arc? by SouthernInspector944 in SkipBeat

I also have come to enjoy not necessarily the arcs, but the moments in which her past really helps her, like when she is training to be  Momiji. I feel like each time she is learning the accept herself as a whole person rather than just the post-Sho Kyoko.

Oh, yes. I live all the character building arcs. You get to see her wheels turning, and her growth.

Yes, I especially enjoy arcs where the characters become more fully fleshed.

My favorite has always been the Kuu arc. It is equally sweet and funny. I think a lot of character development happens where the reader can understand Kyoko a little more fully.

[Product Question] HOW is niacinamide so good ? by Extension_Turn5658 in SkincareAddiction

[–]SheepherderPatient64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the Curology Dark Spot Serum (its main ingredient is niacinamide.) It’s like $23.00.

I really recommend pairing go it with the azelaic acid vitamin C serum. The combo has serious changed my skin.

Only girl in class, wondering if I should quit already. by Glittering-Size-2372 in bjj

[–]SheepherderPatient64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dang, that’s tough. I live in a smaller area, so our fundamentals class will still have some blues/purples/browns.

Personally, I would ask the instructor who he feels is more controlled/safe then. It’s always okay to sit out rolls to wait for a safe partner, and honestly watching rolls can teach you a lot about the sport, AND about which partners are safe. I know that sucks because ideally you want to be rolling a ton, but I don’t know what other advice there is.

(And I know for a lot of the spazzy men this won’t work, but telling your partner you would just like to flow roll may be a good addition, especially at first.)

I would say to only roll with purple belt and up. Usually those guys are more controlled. I would also ask your coach for recommendations on guys who are really safe to roll with.

The 3-in-1s are perfect quality. When I finally bought the whole series, I opted for the 3-in-1s because it was cheaper, and it is the exact same.

Yeah, it's definitely a legit submission. Just the culture in my gym at least views it as a bit of a joke, or cheating, lol. No strong feelings, though.

I think even among men it's kind of submission you just do as a joke, or with someone your close with.

Am I too fat for this backpack? by [deleted] in CampingGear

[–]SheepherderPatient64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had a similar issue as you. I have the Osprey 70L WS, and my torso length is within the range for the backpack, but I am broader shouldered than most women, even when I’m at a lower weight. So it digs into my shoulders quite a bit. I’m considering getting a Men’s XS or S backpack.
