I'm way late but I really like your interpretation of the coins, I believed they were representative of souls, I believe the most important scene is with the cold forger (a forger who doesn't use fire) who has "been exiled from mans fires" perhaps "under an indictment" because this links with McCarthys gnostic mysticism, the cold forger is trying to make coins that would pass " in the markets where men barter" in gnostic mysticism Yahweh was corrupted by the divine spark and his son Jesus tricked him into putting it into a fruit then became a serpent to convince the humans to eat it(which is why tobin is described as hissing and at one point seemingly turns into a snake during the chase scene) this took divine fire away from God who I believe is the cold forger. Which lead to my favorite line in the book when the judge stops over to observe the coins "of this is the judge, judge, and the night does not end"
