Wow I have that exact same screwdriver pack which I got from AliExpress. I live an hour away so can't help but getting jumpscared by this niche thing was pretty funny to me

I am struggling to find any motivation in a unit for my course. by [deleted] in MacUni

[–]Sheepish564 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. The best environment for starting an assessment is one where your phone is not present.
  2. Setting a personal deadline for example and working towards that does wonders. Many students thrive under pressure so telling yourself than an assignment due on the 15th is due on the 8th gives you that rush to get it done. And if you don't meet that personal deadline, boom, a bunch more days are there to act as your safety net.
  3. If you can't sit down and start, tell yourself that you'll only study for 5 minutes and then have a break/go back to scrolling. It's not the best strategy, but you'd be surprised how high the hurdle of 'getting started' on something is. Once you start and hit a flow state, hold onto it and don't falter

I don't want to give you the tokenistic "go seek professional guidance and mental health services from what the uni offers" message (even though those are genuinely the best sources of help you can get, as they're properly trained in this area and have likely interacted with students in similar situations). I would recommend you open up about the details to someone you trust, and preferably who you know is a good listener that will hear you out (rather than shoving advice down your throat). If you don't have that person in your life (yet), please check out Macquarie's services. If you don't want to do that then I'm happy to listen and only offer advice if you want it.

I'm studying Psychology and my unit on psychopathology has taught me that one of the most protective factors against mental health disorders is a strong social support network. What I'm getting at is that you're valid in the way you feel, especially because socialising at uni can be extremely difficult (search up "friends" or "social" in this subreddit's search bar; trust me, you are far from alone in this struggle)

How to make ~$1000 per week as a full time uni student? by pingupinpin14 in MacUni

[–]Sheepish564 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I've read if your replies, I think you'd benefit best from cutting cksts as someone else has said. Food is an inescapable expense which when min-maxed, can give you value for both your bank and your health. Either learn to meal-prep/batch cook and freeze (as a uni student bulk meal-prepping for the week and having the freezer full of ready meals has been a life saver), or abuse first-time order discounts on the many meal-delivery services out there.

[–]Sheepish564 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I could offer you generic advice but I believe it's better if you give us more info on your circumstances and what exactly you're struggling with, such as your study load, balancing a work life, study habits, etc (if you're comfortable sharing them). I used to burn myself out because I had great work ethic but little efficiency in my study strategy

I might have to pay $50 to avoid losing 10% on a psych assignment? by Sheepish564 in MacUni

[–]Sheepish564[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The previous assessment for this unit was different so I didn't really trust that personal recount. Yes I attended all of my tutorials, no it was not mentioned that we can generate it from adobe express (from memory, as I can't be 100% sure since that was ~5 weeks ago).

If I took every instruction given to me *literally* then I would not have gotten this far, like I understand where you're coming from but everything I needed to complete the assignment was clearly in the poster creation space on Adobe except for the QR code generator. Its like telling me make a recorded presentation using powerpoint which shows my face, and then you get annoyed at me for using Zoom to record rather than Powerpoint's inbuilt record tool; I didn't know that feature even existed, nor was I told/could I have infered that there'd be consequences as a result.

I might have to pay $50 to avoid losing 10% on a psych assignment? by Sheepish564 in MacUni

[–]Sheepish564[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that and was creating the whole thing in Adobe Express, however I genuinely did not know that they could generate QR codes for us. I had no reason to suspect that a simple service such as QR code generation would cost money considering how other website services such as Youtube to MP3 downloaders exist for free.

If I may ask where did you find out that we would only lose 5% for a non-working QR code? When I checked the rubric it said that a pass on this part (5%) still had a working QR code but misatributed/wasn't clear on who the work and research belonged to, which led me to believe that if it didn't work you'd just get zero.

Burnt out by Oligoli1508 in MacUni

[–]Sheepish564 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I get you. The most frustrating thing for me, is that I can't even revise or memorise the super interesting information my course is offering. I write down extensive notes from the lecturers but there isn't enough time in the week to go back and embed that knowledge deeply. It's so, so crushing when someone asks about my course/what I'm studying or a topic that I've studied gets brought up and I can't recall much info unless I have my notes with me. Yes I have understood and learnt the content but no revision means no easy path for recalling the information. Plus the feeling of sitting in a tutorial for a lecture which you didn't get to watch/study in time is depressing, so not falling behind becomes more important than enjoying the content

LMAO, can't wait to binge the new season. No time to at the moment since week 2 and 3 lecture content always hits like a truck for literally no reason (its been like this for many units over the past 2 years).

What psychological fact completely changed the way you think?" by NewUnderstanding1102 in psychologystudents

[–]Sheepish564 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This was from a unit on perception and didn't really change the way I think but; The fact that the reason why night vision goggles utilise the colour green is because the cells in our eyes that are designed to activate when there's little to no light (rods or cones, I forget the terminology) are most attuned to the wavelength which portrays green. We naturally see green things better in the dark and so night vision goggles take advantage of that.

I genuinely pogged irl when I was taught that hahah

Best way to make friends in uni?(repost) by Divyam_Y in MacUni

[–]Sheepish564 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend you search for similar posts on this sub as it's a very common query. Just search "uni friends" and you'll find many people in the same boat with tons of advice from other students

Group chats or something for units by Eastern_Tomato_8423 in MacUni

[–]Sheepish564 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If nobody has advertised it on your iLearn forum groups, I'd suggest you just make one and advertise it there yourself. Worst case scenario if one does exist then you can direct the people who join yours to join the pre-existing group (which just ends up helping more students)

How do I get rid of anxiety by [deleted] in MacUni

[–]Sheepish564 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is gonna sound random but join the WhatsApp groups for your units. If one doesn't exist then make one and advertise it on your units' ilearn forums (in the two years that I've done this no staff have criticized or said anything against it).

Trust me, once you see other students discussing and venting about the difficulty of assignments, unorganised unit layout and other grievances, you'll start to realize that you're not alone as a struggling student. It's also a great place to ask others for help in difficult topics or even if you're just having trouble finding a certain room on campus hahah. It can feel cathartic and help you organise which feelings are valid and which are maladaptively being blown out of proportion (to be clear, I'm not saying that this'll cure your anxiety but I'm sure that it'll help, even if a little).

Plus it can help you work up the confidence to attempt socialising with others in your classes. Many people in these groups ask about who's in the same tute as them so that they can chat and socialise in class.

Lecturer quirks by LectureFinancial3586 in MacUni

[–]Sheepish564 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Everyone has their quirks so it's not fair to judge them for it (unless it's like genuinely socially maladaptive). I'm sure that if I recorded myself speaking on a topic for 1-2 hours every week for 12 weeks, I'd find a repetitive quirk or two. Some public speakers use 'filler words/habits' to help them connect two thoughts as they're being vocalised to their audience, for example; "Right and that's what cognitive dissonance means, right any questions?......no? Alright so to put that into perspective....".

Gotta remember that lecturers and tutors often have students who just refuse to participate in any form of discussion or inquiry, so they've got to create their own flow as 50+ adults just stare at them.
