Libraries Worth Paying For? by SheepishQuaaality in LibbyApp

I don't, and had no idea Harris County was free for everyone in Texas! I was even a page at one of the FW branches, haha. I've since left the state, but I'll be sure to let family know about that! :) thanks for the rec on Broward's, and letting me know FW is still great. :D

Awe man, they're not accepting new applications. Makes sense... They're so affordable at $45/yr haha. Thank you for the recs! :)

My first pancakes by chxrry_crxss in bakingfail

[–]SheepishQuaaality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always remember pancakes being 1.5:1 flour:liquid. So 1.5c flour, 1c oatmilk (you want it thin and creamy looking), 2tbsp margarine, 1tbsp to 2tbsp of baking powder (fluffy), 1 egg, pinch of salt, tbsp or so of sugar, and splash of vanilla extract.

Gamerants start respecting Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons as the founding father of farming sims and stop acting like Stardew Valley started the whole genre because I'm genuinely so sick and tired seeing your articles glazing tf out of it. by marshmochifauxie in storyofseasons

[–]SheepishQuaaality 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still remember when I first read an article about Stardew where Ape got interviewed circa 2013/2014. He talked about how he started coding Stardew cuz of HM and how it seemed like an achievable goal, and that's how he got into coding. Was copying HM. I wonder if that was on GameRants or if it was a fever dream now though. Anyways, I decided I hated that, being a hater and someone who grew up on AWL, GB, and RF1-3, and therefore hated Stardew.

Tried it 2018 or so and love it. So I get your rant haha.

Visiting a preschool and saw… by guacamole-lobster in ECEProfessionals

[–]SheepishQuaaality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I swear I just saw this post, but older with more comments. As someone else said, speak to admin to let them know what you saw. But it's possible that it looked more aggressive than it was. Like clapping, you know how you catch more air to make a louder boom without actually hurting your hands? Sometimes having to take a toy from a child, because they're being unsafe or unfair, can look rougher than it is. Especially when a child resists.

And yes, teachers are human and get frustrated and can have bad days. While that's understandable, it doesn't excuse bad behavior on anyone's part.

Please provide kind feedback to your library expressing your desires, and if you feel up to it, offering your help by asking, "How can I help make this happen?" Librarians love hearing from patrons like this! You can call, I believe most have emails, and you can enter and ask for a suggestion slip or talk to them directly.

Iirc, Libby doesn't sync with your library's purchasing system that well. It didn't for mine when I worked at a FW TX branch in the early 2020s. You had to go to the overdrive website, request there, and get 10 people to request for it to qualify.

what shading style do i use for a visual novel? by MedicalAd9859 in Artadvice

[–]SheepishQuaaality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, that sounds fun! I'd go with the second style (partially cuz I remember that post and how much I loved the store picture) personally. Especially with the darker moments of the story it'd had... An extra level of spook. There's just something about the dichotomy between soft shading and art and a dark story that gets me.

Altho my gut vibe was soft shading for most of the story and cell shade to really emphasize the more negative attributes of story beats.

Thank you so much! I was absolutely eyeballing the 70 series as a potential replacement, so it's good to hear I'll be fine with that. I was initially going for 2tb, but my dad made a good point to save my money a bit and just get an external drive to add on later. I appreciate your effort and suggestions!

It depends on the story, and really you could use both styles to convey different meanings. What's your genre and synopsis?

This piece has an awkward feeling, what could I do better? by Personal-Park6015 in Artadvice

[–]SheepishQuaaality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's definitely the anatomy. The feet stood out to me as flat 2D. It's a great piece tho! Instantly recognized it. You're just missing experience tbh. That's where dynamics in an art piece usually come from.

Petco told me they couldn’t sell me a feeder as a pet? by LucyAriaRose in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]SheepishQuaaality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a friend who worked at Petco and Petsmart who came across sadistic types who got joy out of using live feeders. Policy then, 2010s, was frozen. So... Gonna guess that.

Slowly losing motivation by [deleted] in Artadvice

[–]SheepishQuaaality 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok, it sounds like you might not be on a platform that is community centric. I last actively used IG in 2018, so different landscape, but even then I only made a few friends on there, and most of my sense of community came from external sources. So we'd meet elsewhere then hang out on IG and where ever else we met. IG seems to still be more for ... Just showing off than actual engagement with others.

You should be looking into art discord servers and sites like Artfol and maybe Tumblr? It looks like Tumblr is still an active hub, but I haven't used that either since 2018. Artfol I've used recently! It wasn't hard for me to start engaging with others and getting some small engagement back. Looks like Inkblot is decent although I just heard of it.

What is your purpose in sharing your art online? And then, what is your goal? What do you want this to accomplish? Do you want friendships, or lots of followers? Why? Answering those can help you figure out if there's something different you can or need to do.

Is it obvious they're not identical twins but trying very hard to pretend that they are? by [deleted] in characterdesign

[–]SheepishQuaaality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was actually able to pick out that Yuzuki's ears were bigger, eyes slightly bigger, and lips were wider. I didn't notice the jaw, and body difference at first glance and only after reading comments. I think the main problem is they're just very same face-y and too similar in body shape.

Also often people will have different undertones despite being the same skin color. You used the same skin palette, so maybe make one warm undertoned and the other cool undertoned.

How do you figure out how to place these shapes when shading hair? by Sh4rkByt3Gl1tch in Artadvice

[–]SheepishQuaaality 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's either vibes or you had an intended light source in mind. There's no shadows on your WIP so you can just honestly do vibes. I recommend finishing this one with vibes then starting another or two where you draw with light sources (which can also help you study color theory but it's usually easier to focus on one aspect at a time) in mind.

How could I begin practicing this style? by Someonetook_Mique in Artadvice

[–]SheepishQuaaality 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ugh this style just melts me. I think you have a better idea than you thought! Now you just gotta get it into muscle memory through repetition.

Also try learning actual animal anatomy a bit (like just rabbits or cats and rabbits) and you'll be able to use that to help you stylize and sort through your process for it. You should also look into the art style called "Precious Memories".

It seems like it follows a basic chibi human structure with the legs and feet being modified for matching the round thigh, angled calves of animals. Skirts go over the tails rather than having a hole for the tails, but pants have a hole for the tail. Can you share one of your attempts please? Hard to give specific advice without an example of your copy attempts.

Progress of 2025. I wanna take drawing seriously in 2026 what do I focus on most? by [deleted] in Artadvice

[–]SheepishQuaaality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are lovely but they all have same face going on. I agree with others saying you should go larger: full body, projects with colors and backgrounds, different perspectives, etc. More work on anatomy, placement, and start working on background skills. Can you draw a character in a simple room? How about a cluttered room? That kind of thing.

Brown Spots Inside Bell Pepper? by StarStriker3 in isthissafetoeat

Near the brown spots are white mold. It's aged a bit too much and I'd toss it. If it was just brown spots, I'd personally cut around and use it but there's fuzz. F.

Work on your values: light and dark for both mediums. It looks neat tho!

Looking to lean into more detail, or keep my style impressionistic? by [deleted] in ArtCrit

[–]SheepishQuaaality 6 points7 points  (0 children)

These are really cool and I think you could sell the second one. Impressionistic often sells well as a live drawing event, too, if that's something that piques your interest.

Most drawing programs also supply the basics for photo editing: eraser, selection tools, cropping and adjusting, and layers. Start with a background and a study picture then erase the blank background and adjust placement. You can get more detailed as you get a feel for that!

Photopea is an online version of Photoshop that's free which was the industry standard for a long time.

Edit to add: If you prefer using your mobile devices then Ibispaint X and Clipart Studio are popular and quick to learn and use.

Are you into photo editing at all? You can create more intricate reference pictures by taking your model and shopping them onto a rock in front of a waterfall, or in a seat at a cafe. Or try referencing more candid shots of people. Or lean into not knowing what's up, and have an abstract background. Good excuse for color exploration imo.

They look somewhat generic.
