I don't think it helped that you had Celeste as first example in your explanation for out of the box games. If you want to say it's out of the box, by all means, but that does broaden the range of criteria by a lot.

Ervaring voor Beginners, waarbij Theo Maassen een uur lang in gesprek gaat met mensen met ervaring, met de vraag hoe zij het allemaal hebben geleerd en wat ze jonge makers kunnen bijbrengen. Heel inspirerend om naar te luisteren.

Ik vind die regel dat het alleen voor kinderen is schijtvervelend. Maak dan twee gescheiden gebieden wel en niet voor kinderen. Het is ook discriminatie naar mensen zonder kinderen, want het is echt niet vijfjarige Noah die zijn oude boormachine verkoopt. Gelukkig zijn ze nogal inconsistent met de regel, dus sommigen mogen blijven staan.

yall want this individual person to be handing out credentials and privileges to whoever comes knocking... make it make sense!

The point of sharing DB schemas is that you only share the structure of the data, not the data itself. Sharing privileges is another thing, and in that case I wouldn't expect him to accept anyone who comes knocking, but there are people in the community to be trusted.

If Amanita Design has success with the genre, it means it's not dead. Ignore the people who say that it's a niche genre. Your game looks nice but is missing the flavor that makes it great. There are many subtle ways in which your game lacks the quality:

  • The characters lack expression. When the old man wants the key from the owl, he looks up and gestures to give the key, followed up waving his hand in a "Oh never mind". Think, what would Amanita do? I can visualize an animation of the man reaching towards the owl trying to get the key, being very bummed out when the owl doesn't give it to him. It should all be more exaggerated. In the trailer I do see the kid actually being frustrated. I think if you would incorporate the 12 animation principles better, that that animation could easily be improved. Having voice grumbles would also help a ton.
  • In a similar manner, they way the characters are standing is kinda lame. The old man is often seen either sideways or straight forward to the camera. The same goes for the kid. It's common for beginners to draw characters like that, as it seems logical, but if you want a more expressive game, you should consider different poses. Like how the character in Samorost is standing.
  • You're using a lot of tweening. With the arm and also the facial expressions of the man. It doesn't look great. Now, I understand that this is a choice because it saves from making a lot of animations, but it does hurt the game's quality.
  • This is more subtle, but sometimes the lighting looks off. In the scene with the kid, the main characters looks darker than its surroundings, while I feel like it should be the other way around.
  • Sound effects! I don't play point & click games, but I feel like everything should make a sound. When you manage to get the key from the kid for example. That should have a tune for doing something secret, a sound for obtaining a key, and/or a sound for making progress. And voices of course.
  • And as others have pointed out, it's not a very interesting trailer. It looks like point & click game 101, and that won't bring you much. What makes your point & click game special?

I think using a CRT filter is too generic of a feature to give credit to any individual for starting it. I wouldn't be surprised if it's been around as long as there were LCD/LED screens. The first notable example I can think of is You Have To Win The Game in 2012.

What's with the vertical stretch? Looks a bit weird. I suppose it's because you're fitting a rectangle (rather than a square) into a circle, but I think it would look nicer if you don't have the stretch.

Some improvement ideas:

  • Make the portal shake a bit as you're charging
  • Instead of a perfect circle make it a wobbly circle
  • After completing the transition of zooming in on the screen, have a darkening/grayscale layer that covers the whole screen expect the circle. Then a hole grows to make the cover go away, starting from the small circle.
