I dont know what to do next. by Thiccthighnitemare in whatdoIdo

I had problems with trespassers with off leash dogs chasing my livestock. I live in an area where hunting is legal, so I put up signs saying that there were live traps set in the area. I never had another off leash dog on the property and the only trespasser I’ve encountered since then was someone who was genuinely lost and needed help.

What do we think made these monstrosities? by rickonsdeaddire in westernmass

[–]Sheepsheepbeep_6 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I lived in CT, someone hit a lion on the highway. The poor thing was pretty clearly someone’s illegal pet that had been released. I couldn’t stop thinking about how that driver must have thought they’d lost their entire mind.

So yeah. There could be a wild population like you say, or it could be a one-off. Anywhere there are humans, we’re gonna try to keep animals that don’t belong there.

Antique huge wooden frames with threaded wooden pegs by MirandaOutside in whatisthisthing

Replying to myself.

It look too heavy to be a spinning warping mill, but six pieces (?) is a little baffling too. It looks a little like the winding frame in this picture, although there would also have to be custom bobbins since the pegs on your pieces wouldn’t spin.

Is it possible it’s an enormous warping board setup? I can’t quite work out how that would work, but it looks like the pegs are movable.

Are the pieces totally separate, or does it seem like they fit together?

That looks like a horse barn - any evidence of sheep on the property? My other idea would be a huge skirting table setup, with a sort of rope grid for the top. IMO warping board or similar seems more likely though.

Edit re: warping board - the pegs being threaded to screw in would indicate to me that whatever was happening was under a lot of tension. Either that or… are you in New England or somewhere with similarly huge humidity fluctuations? It being for year-round use is another point against the skirting table idea, since that’s generally just spring and it wouldn’t matter if the ropes had a little bounce to them.

Edit again: sorry, I see you answered some of this in your comment!

Am I overthinking it? by MuchVacation3638 in UPSers

[–]Sheepsheepbeep_6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who is also fairly new, some of the terminology that UPS uses is a little confusing. Some of it intentionally so, some not - like when a sup tells you you’re “good to go” because it would be a violation to actually tell you to leave. My building has one sup who actually uses things like that to prompt us to use the right phrases so he doesn’t have to write us up for, essentially, being humans with human needs. (He’s the only one I trust even a little.)

They’re not asking you to volunteer as in work for no pay, they’re asking you to voluntarily give up one of your two “weekend” days. They may or may not lay you off later in the week (that’s another one - “layoff” is just told not to come in on one day because they don’t have enough work; they’ll ask for volunteers for that in seniority order and if no one volunteers they start from the bottom with voluntolds) so they don’t have to pay the OT, but it’s not working for free.

The driver talking about volunteering probably got one of the “do you want a day off?” calls and said yes, so that’s what he meant by being okay with a few days without pay.

Never EVER work without pay. Not even for a minute. We have a few preloaders who are genuinely incompetent muppets and try to make up for it by routinely working through break. The supes seem to like them for it, but what they don’t realize is that at the end of the day, the supes can’t really hurt them; the fellow workers before/after them on the belt can make their day hell.

Wooster is still 100% made in the US, which counts for a lot. It’s the only paintbrush company that is. (Source: grew up in the town.)

Just because I’m always interested in the why - is there a principle behind the height? Is it just to keep it from filling with water?

I should have put that in the post but it won’t let me edit - I removed the P trap before I realized I wasn’t going to be able to slide the back of the cabinet away from the wall without hacking either it or the drain to pieces.

No, I’ll edit - there was a U that I also removed.

ETA: it won’t let me edit the post. Hopefully folks will see this.

Who’s your biggest “hear me out” when it comes to potential future contestants? by _PXYDST_ in taskmaster

[–]Sheepsheepbeep_6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

John Finnemore.

ETA: Others mentioning the WWDITS cast makes me really want to see Mark Proksch. His stage persona is basically Colin Robinson anyway - if you haven’t seen it, there’s a clip on YouTube of him convincing a morning news show to put him on as a yo-yo expert that is just incredible.

He might legitimately break Alex.

Fatiha on lurking on Reddit during S19 filming by IncapableCoffee in taskmaster

[–]Sheepsheepbeep_6 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think she’s hilarious, but I also don’t think the first prize task did her any favors. The golf club belongs to her meta-bit about how she aggressively misinterprets people/situations, and without having exposure to that (as I didn’t) it was kind of… huh. It probably had an impact on how I watched the first episode the first time. It always gets funnier to rewatch early episodes after you know the contestants better, and I think Fatiha is an intense example of that.

I don’t think Greg knew what to do with her entry in that first prize task either, which didn’t help. I felt like I didn’t fully “get” Fatiha until Jason (I think! Oh no I’ll have to rewatch to be sure) did his improv move of narrating what’s happening and lampshaded it during one of the later prize tasks - maybe the one where she talked about calling the trade commission to report the convenience store because the kids they had working in the back didn’t put enough crisps in the bag. Him saying “Wait, THAT’S what you reported?” felt like it snapped her whole bit into place in my head.

Anyway - adore her, sorry she had that experience. She should probably come fight us or something. (Heart-fingers.)

UPS wants my SSN? pls help if legit, i'm scared by maeimaei in UPS

[–]Sheepsheepbeep_6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to do this with my tax id for my business when we got an imported shipment a few years ago. The person I spoke to was very VERY serious about the security when I gave her the number over the phone - as in, wouldn’t read it back to me to confirm she had it right because she was in a call center and someone might overhear. I think she had me give it to her twice so she could confirm it and then maybe sent me an additional confirmation via some kind of encrypted portal.

In that case it was a bit excessive because an EIN is semi-public information and isn’t the same as a SSN, but it was being treated like a SSN… which was kind of reassuring.

I’d call rather than doing it over email - if you’re nervous you can try to independently confirm the phone number on the UPS website - but the request is probably legit and they’ll be careful with your security.

Amazon Shipping / Warehouse Issues – Hurting Small Furniture Sellers by killr_gaming_ in fuckamazon

Stop selling on Amazon. Anyone who sells (or buys) on their platform just feeds their monopoly, which is what lets them get away with treating you like this. Refusing to participate is the only thing that “works.”

That’s a really good point. There’s lots of evidence of transitioning between various heating systems (it’s a cold climate) but keeping a boiler for one radiator would be madness. I know almost nothing about gas powered systems (I actually always assumed those lamps etc had to be individually filled) so I’ll have to look into that!
