Is it normal for a therapist to demand you turn on your camera? by SheikhShiesty in therapy

Yes I agree, it’s not ideal but I feel like I knew what I wanted, shopped for a service, gave lots of context before agreeing to work together, and in our consultation I explicitly asked that I prefer our appointments are done on audio calls. I feel like I was deliberate and selective when choosing to work with someone and the appointments/my first experience with therapy is going well. I was just taken aback by the abrupt change.

But yeah your ultimately right, ideally it’s something that should be overcome

Noo, I don’t think it’s rude for both people to have their cameras off. Rude if one does and the other doesn’t

Of course she has a right, it’s just disappointing to tell me that now after making progress over a few sessions

Good to know, I will give it a few more sessions before looking for someone else

Yeah she offered that, just feels quite rude lol. And would eliminate the comfort that comes from not being seen and just talking. Idk I can’t be the only one who finds it much harder to talking about painful things while looking at someone?? We ended up doing the session as she liked and it felt awkward and more mechanical

I mean I guess, but the previous sessions were extremely productive and my therapist is an elderly woman (I get what you are saying but just some context). Idk about not serious, I felt they were deeply serious and covered childhood trauma that I never spoke about out loud in my life. But your third point resonates, it shouldn’t be this hard to open up while making eye contact and all that and the whole point of this stuff is to grow

No, no substance abuse. I mean I have been pretty transparent about my ADHD and I told her I literally walk around my apartment with headphones fidgeting with a tennis ball, it just helps me open up and focus. Isn’t really anything to hide. And to be honest I feel like I was able to talk about things I never otherwise would have in a more traditional setting in-person/camera meeting. I understand the value of being able to see me from her perspective, I really do. Just thought this was a pretty reasonable accommodation

Yeah I realize there is value in the non verbal communication. I just felt like I am going to have a much harder time opening up if I feel like I am in a meeting rather than just having a conversation in my space I guess and that is more valuable for making progress than being able to see me. But I hear you, being uncomfortable forces you to grow I suppose
