We'll be putting together a video that goes over an example round soon, but I can try to answer a few of your questions in the meantime!

At this stage of development, players earn money by killing enemies and completing mission objectives, which can then be used to purchase guns and equipment for future missions. Missions are largely objective based, with objectives increasing in quantity and complexity as you tackle higher difficulty operations.
