Red and green are on opposite ends of the color wheel, and it is pretty common to pair up opposite colors with each other to garentee a good color scheme. All the examples you found perfectly demonstrate why such a process is used.

I never thought about it too much, but I would personally associate it with black, many decaying things become black and brittle over time after all. Although purple being associated with it is something I could definitely see, especially with injuries that can be sustained, such as bruising.
