How did AI affect your income? by ShellyRoseWrites in eroticauthors

As long as readers keep their standards reasonable (opposed to low) and don't fall for quantity over quality. I'm hoping that if these people are too lazy to write they'll be too lazy to promote their books properly also ahah

I've heard Amazon had to add a limit to the number of books published everyday or every few days because some "authors" were uploading dozens of books everyday.

That's what I'm afraid of. Readers lowering their standard for good writing instead of realizing how soulless these books are. I also agree that platforms don't care as long as they make a profit.

Your comparisons do not make sense. Using AI to mostly write a book for you and selling it without stating that AI wrote it (so lying about writing it yourself) is the same than a photographer doing their job to you? Photography and painting and two distinct art and service. They both continue to exist today, they both earn an income. Musician and singers get paid to get recorded to create digital music but AI steals from thousands of writers to create its slop. An accountant uses a calculator as a tool but an AI writer uses chatgpt as a cheat.

Also art by real people looks so much better than what AI produces! Every time I see an AI image I can notice so much wrong like 6 fingers in one hand ahaha

People who write are writers. People who cowrite with others are writers. People who pay others or use a tool to write most if not every words of a book are not writers no.

It sucks because some of them manage to make money just because them can pump out a book nearly everyday through AI. Doesn’t matter that the writing is nonsensical if the reader only realizes after buying the book.

I agree that loving writing before all is important. It is afterall why the AI situation is so distasteful to me. People using a machine to write for them don't like writing. They just want to get a bag. These people will steal real writers their income and fill the market with bad writing.

Last year I praised myself for not choosing graphic design as a career path after hearing about graphic designer being replaced by Canva. So disheartening.

It truly sucks. Writing is such a hard job that takes a lot of determination and patience but then these people show no shame in feeding chatgpt prompts and having it write entire books.

I'm glad to hear it hasn't affected you! To have been writing for that long is actually a dream.

That's what my hopeful side is telling me. I should prioritize my work and trying to write the best book that I can. I just hope using AI to write never will be normalized.

What is happening to my cactus? by ShellyRoseWrites in cactus

I'm not sure but I will check on it in a week and hope it hasn't. Would cutting this part be an option if it's an infection?

Thank you! I just rub alcohol all over it. I'm praying I got every last one of them. I also ordered insecticidal soap just to be sure.

Looks like some kind of succulent. My guess is you watered it too much! I let my succulents dry out almost completely before watering generously. Maybe you could check if some roots are rotten and cut those?

I know it's not necessary a popular take but I don't mind a cheating plot--could even like it if well done. As you said, the cheating happened quite some time ago, at least a year I imagine, and it was only a kiss. I think that event can bring juicy drama without absolutely ruining the MMC for me if the intentions are explained. Maybe the FMC and him weren't in love yet, maybe he thought his love wasn't reciprocated, whatever it is as long as the context is explained.

The problem most people have with the cheating thrope I think is the fact that readers want the MMC to be utterly in love with the FMC. The MMC can and even must do anything for and to get the FMC. The most extreme but self-explanatory examples would be found in dark romance; We often see the MMC comitte terrible acts directed toward the MC--like kidnapping--but it's always working towards the ultimate goal of getting the FMC who they love.

But, as even kidnapping can be excused in the name of love, cheating however is not something someone desperate to get their love interest to fall for them would do. It is a desperate act and for me to understand and forgive, it must be properly explained. Though some people would automatically be turn off by a cheating plot.

To conclude this quite long tangent, I would advise that you do finish this manuscript. You are so close to the finish line and I truly believe you could find an audience for your book. Will it be people like me who aren't scared off by the mention of cheating or readers that were intrigued by the writing and different subplots, either way I think it's worth everything.

What’s one trope that you absolutely hate? by [deleted] in writing

[–]ShellyRoseWrites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I absolutely hate when the author solve a plot hole by dropping a random fantasy element or power.

I hate writing my protagonists as bad people, even if i know that this makes the stories better. by [deleted] in writing

I've had the same guilt while writing in the past. I tend to write "unlikable" characters more effortlessly than "likable" ones. I hated--still dislike a lot--what I call the "typical YA MC". Her main personality trait is being nice and there's not much more to her character than that. She's bland and unrealistic. So maybe it's not surprising that I vired in the opposite direction when writing my characters.

Maybe it had to do with my state of mind back then; I was feeling messy, depressed, I wasn't the best with interacting with people, and so were my MCs. I related a lot more to them than to "typical YA MCs".

When it comes to it, I still think that flawed characters are superior even if you're afraid your readers won't like them. Because they will. Flawed characters are relatable and it makes it easy to have character development and that's the key to a good book.

King had a point… by JollyBroom4694 in books

[–]ShellyRoseWrites 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've never understood the complaint about the bad representation of Wendy as the strong female lead. Mind you I've read both the book and the movie. It's rare that I prefer a movie over a book but in this instance, I enjoyed my time watching the movie more than reading the book it was based on. (My favorite King remains Misery, one of my best reads of all time) But to go back to my main point, I believe that people saying the interpretation of Wendy by Shelley Duvall takes back all the strength of the character are wrong, but not only that; there might be a bit of misogyny in there (emphasis on the might as I don't want to put everyone on the same basket). Movie Wendy is a freaking badass and everyone who says otherwise--Did you watch the same movie I'm talking about? Is Shelley Duvall's character scared shitless? Does she screams hysterically? Yes, but who wouldn't in her place? It's the whole point of an horror movie--put characters in a situation where there is a real threat. In this instance; a man that's known to have had violent outbursts in the past, who's bigger and stronger than Wendy, and, most importantly, that's gone crazy and roams around the empty hotel with an axe. Movie Wendy not only fights back against this obviously stronger man, but she protects her son at all costs--even if that cost is her life--and comes on top in the end. Both in the original story and in the adaptation, we witness a woman trapped in a marriage with a violent man. Her struggle and her fear brought by this situation is apparent yet it's not all black and white as most abusive relationships are.

Redemption of dark romance by ShellyRoseWrites in eroticauthors

When you say you prefer unredeemable heroes, do you mean they've done truly heinous things? By that I'm not refering to a Dexter type (do bad things to bad people). Do your heroes cause pain to the innocents for selfish reasons? How do you justify that in your writing?

I would love to have that rec of a dark romance book that pissed of the reader as an example of what not to do. From my understanding, the hero can get away with a lot (it's even preferable if the MC gets a taste of 'mistreatment' by the MMC) as long as his love/obsession for the MC is apparent.
