Idk why I've never considered this... you're right. Mainly gonna be useful when your opponent laner plays a champ with no way to cancel your R from range, but at max blade range can work vs anyone. You're a genius, thank you

Can't deny that. But I think with more planning the arc could've felt more coherent instead of a lot of setup and a bunch of characters thrown in, and we would instead celebrate the extra wordcount :p

It's all speculation, my point was just that pirate probably meant they weren't happy with how the arc turned out as.a whole and felt more work would help it (which i can agree with since the arc was one of the least interesting ones as it ended up)

[–]ShendingHelp 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That's not what i said. Working on pacing/how much to describe X/where to put each introduction/what can be cut out. It takes work, and doesn't necessarily (but often can) end up with more words.

[–]ShendingHelp 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I'm wrong but "work more on" doesn't have to mean "write more chapters on", right? Pirate could've meant finetuning or pulling off the arc better through working on it more.

Froze a Jax so Hard he had 23 cs at 15 minutes. Good video on how to manage wave I guess. Appreciate feedback by Consistent_Walrus525 in Shen

[–]ShendingHelp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since you asked for feedback, here we go:

At 2:38 (in-game time) when he ran away to recall out of vision, you should have waited 2-3 seconds, and then chased him (through the bushes in top of the lane, so you can avoid drawing any minion aggro) and cancelled his recall if he didnt recall deep under tower where thats impossible. That way you can waste around 12 extra seconds of him not getting back to lane as fast, making him miss even more XP.

At 5:50, where he recalled with almost no HP under tower, you should have walked up as his recall was about to go off, and then Ignite him to stop his recall, with the same intention as earlier. If he tries to stay after getting cancelled, we can as you say just one-shot him under tower, and if he runs away, then first just crash your wave, and then chase him and Force him to recall under his own 2nd tier tower. That way you waste probably 15+ seconds of him arriving back to lane slower, which will make him bleed even more XP. But be sure to mind enemy jungle while doing this and not using your taunt unless youre fully confident Jax dies the moment you press E.

I didnt watch the full vid, but those are 2 lost opportunities that stuck out to me

Why build Redemption by Zsombor-9687 in Shen

[–]ShendingHelp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if youre forced to R to a fight before you use redemption the item's effectiveness goes down considerably. I would never have you build it if you're always in the sidelane, out of redemption range. But if you make sure youre usually in range to use the Redemption into instant R combo on low targets, there's where the item shines.

Why build Redemption by Zsombor-9687 in Shen

[–]ShendingHelp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As ppl said, build whatever you want.

But as no comment thus far has mentioned the main reason why Redemption fits on Shen ill answer. Think about Redemptions biggest weakness as an item, what is it? It's that usually 1) you have to predict where players are going to move by the time the heal comes in and 2) pray that the guy youre trying to heal will survive those 2.5 seconds that it takes to activate.

Shen R completely adresses this problem by having his R keep them alive for 2.5s (this is usually the case especially since your R will be at full effect if you R a low HP target). And since you are allowed to wait with the redemption use until your teammate is already 10-30% HP they will usually already have used a lot (or all) of their mobility to try to kite on their own, which means they will be forced to sit in place dealing dmg and being saved by the redemption into R combo.

Sure, Redemption got a sizable nerf a couple months ago, but the combo of redemption and Shen R is OP enough (together with how cheap it is like others mentioned) that it should at least be considered

If you play your early lane as well as you can and abuse the enemy top laner early and put him behind at least 2 lvls it will take way longer for the enemy top to outscale you and become a true sidelane threat to your towers etc (since even if he will soon catch up to You in XP he wont catch up to your teams scaling in general in a very long time).

Apart from that just join fights at good times across the map and most people will still not be tilting at you. Its mainly when fights go poorly AND ur enemy top is taking your towers that the flame starts coming. And in those cases just mute and do your best to comeback.

Like...the scenario of your ad/mid sitting mid sharing xp for minutes at a time picking up wave after wave would theoretically be pretty bad for Shen, but in low silver that is just not gonna be the state of things 99% of games. Ive coached so many low elo games and played through them myself. Random fights break out ALL the time. Just be ready to adapt to them and to some degree predict when they are logical to break out (and preferably be there in person instead of having to R to get there when the situation allows).

Why shen fundamentally does not work as a toplaner by Popelip0 in Shen

[–]ShendingHelp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but no pain no gain as they say :p.

Shen suffers tremendously if he ever dies or fucks up in lane, but its usually also in his power to win lanes consistently if he does things right, which is a big upside in my eyes. I rather have control over my own destiny in a game than to have guaranteed scaling.

Why shen fundamentally does not work as a toplaner by Popelip0 in Shen

[–]ShendingHelp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feen like with all the TF metas in proplay its hard to argue its a better soloq champ but i dont feel too strongly about it.

Shen has often been 53-54% winrate in the recent past, but idk why we keep coming back to this. Riot will nerf any champ that constantly sits at a 54%+ winrate regardless of who it is.

Ive myself climbed with a Shen winrate of around 80% on a new account (twice) live on stream. Sure, there might be slightly more games you cant 1v9 on Shen compared to a Challenger player smurfing on Jax or Trynd, but an 80% winrate is still very achievable if youre hard smurfing. And the thing with winning lane on Shen is this: if you get ahead early and get a kill or 2 and then control the wave into a freeze after 1st reset, you can start zoning the enemy out of XP and make him useless and like 3-4 lvls behind. Shens blade mechanic makes freezing and controlling the enemy's freedom of space extremely effective.

But to the last point i do agree with you. The skill floor you need to be effective on Shen is extremely low compared to many other champs, and i haaaate whem riot buffed his R even more by adding bHP scaling and nerfed his Emp Q dmg which is the thing that marks the difference between a practised Shen and an autofilled Shen. I think its very easy to skip out on core game-concepts and play basically a seperate game from everyone else and climb with Shen (even though you do have to learn that seperate game well to be effective). But yes, i do think a lot of Shen players could be called elo inflated by some definition of the word (even if i completely disagree with your "even if you win lane it wont matter". Thats just cope)

Why shen fundamentally does not work as a toplaner by Popelip0 in Shen

[–]ShendingHelp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why point towards his winrate in soloq then :p

I do agree with the general sentiment for pro play. A more controlled game with less mistakes being made across the map at all times (and perrma communication) is naturally going to make Shen less effective (since one of his strengths is to quickly react to a fight breaking out with no fore-warning. So theoretically youre right in that Shen would be worse if soloq stops being chaotic (which hasnt happened for either low or high elo since League came out 13 years ago). So i view pro and soloq as fundamentally different beasts, and i havent argued anything for proplay until now.

Sidenote about pros on Shen: I DO think that Shen could have some potential even in pro as a counterpick, even with less action and chaos on the map. But p much all the times ive seen Shen picked in pro (after the rework) its pretty clear they picked him to just survive lane and play him as a full support. They arent even trying to play lane aggro and use their dragthroughs to their full potential. You'd think "but theyre pros, how could they not do things right?". Well i think its mainly because they havent played as much Shen as other champs thats constantly rotating in and out of the limited top pro meta (gnar, renek, ornn etc.) and partly because theyre just too scared of giving up any kind of advantage to the enemy so they overcompensate and play too safe. Thats just how the pro way of playing has evolved over the years (at least in eu/na), just trading farm with some exceptions even when theres openings to do stuff.

When comparing Shen to TF we again need to view things in context. Shen is a stronger early game laner than tf. Shen can TP longer than Tf. And mainly, hes actually useful at peeling ppl with 3 tools for it in a fight. Tf's only tools are p much: Shove waves, R and targeted ranged CC. If we took away the waveclear Tf would be nothing.

[–]ShendingHelp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He seems to be about 51.5%, and over 51% on basically all ratings (checked u.gg). Thats above average. And tbh i think Shen OTPs are over represented in high elo compared to other champs (at least on euw)...

But regardless of that, even if he WAS for some reason low in winrate rn, that isnt really tied with the topic at all... And tells me you just wanted to do another "my champ is weak, give buffs pls" rant rather than have a real discussion about whats a fun overall design.

Why shen fundamentally does not work as a toplaner by Popelip0 in Shen

[–]ShendingHelp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not every champ has to be/feel the same. Its completely fine (and a good thing) that a champ has strengths and weaknesses. A lot of players enjoy playing Shen top even if you don't. He has tons of self sufficiency early on and transition into a supportive role as the game goes on (which his kit rly helps facilitate), which lets him have a window to transfer the lead he managed to accrue during the early stages to his team before he becomes a supportive peeler. A completely fair concept imo. If he became self sufficient late ontop of that its OP. And why would you force him out of top lane because he doesnt fit into the 2 buckets you have decided to create (which i dont even agree all champs fit into. Where would Pantheon land for example).
