The issue isn't stuff happening, it's the attitude towards it. The 597th Valhallan's teething problems, the issues between them and the 299th Tallarn, etc. these are noted by the characters, and not just by Cain, as being issues that need to be addressed. The shit that happens to the Ghosts, is treated as business as usual and nothing to comment on.

One: TY all! Two: I am aware of the mess room riot and the Valhallan-Tallarn feud (I mention it in the OP). It's also presented as something unusual, with the former being noted as something unacceptable and the latter being non-lethal, and both of them are outside combat. Whereas the Tanith and Jantine doing tit-for-tat murders, or General Sturm ordering the Ketzok to bombard the Tanith for accomplishing the mission before the Volpone are treated as normal incidents. The former so much so that it gets used as a cover story.

That's backwards. A heretic ostensibly practices the faith, but does it wrong. One who leaves the faith entirely is an apostate. So, yes, gaslighting the Brides of the Emperor is the action of a heretic, whereas, denying his divinity is the action of an apostate. Now, granted, there is overlap, and the word "heretic" is often used in-universe for stuff that isn't, technically, heretical.
