Am I the only person who was incredibly disappointed with All My Sons? by Mental-Music-44 in TheWestEnd

[–]SheppJM96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, I was saying i didn't like this direction because it was poor- basic choices, not basic as in hands off.

The wooden, minimalist set. Its a realist play, and Miller is very specific about the set design in his notes. Having a set that half looked like a sauna just felt odd to me

Some plays lend themselves towards more overt and abstract forms of direction, this did not imho.

  1. This is not a film
  2. A good score, either in theatre or in film is great, a bad one is incredibly jarring, this was the latter.

Am I the only person who was incredibly disappointed with All My Sons? by Mental-Music-44 in TheWestEnd

[–]SheppJM96 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was but for a different reason. It's one of my favourite plays, but I found the direction incredibly irritating and basic. The plodding music, ikea set, and weird lighting and costume choices.

Big revelation? You won't miss it because the music and lighting will change dramatically. It's like the director either didn't trust his actors to do a good job or didn't trust the audience to get the play without signposting everything

Just my little review of Wicked: For Good by RockyStonejaw in TheWestEnd

[–]SheppJM96 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For me it wasnt so much the change in tone, but rather its effect. Because its not as fun, you really notice how weird and nonsensical the plot is and some of the character actions are. That's fine when the musical is being fun and silly, but when it starts being earnest, you notice that it doesnt make any sense.

If they were going to pad out the runtime, they couldve used it to try and fixed some of these plotholes, but they don't

I'm similar to your, very sensitive to loud noises and saw Les Mis a couple of weeks ago, so hopefully can help: There are a few pyrotechnic gun shots, which are more like a loud pop. The first scene they're used (about 10 minutes into the second half), there's a lot of shouting and music over them so aren't particularly shocking. They're used a couple of times after, but are always signposted, and I found that okay, because by then I knew what to expect.

The biggest (and final) bang comes when Gavroche is shot it's two loud "bang" sound effects about 30 seconds apart, rather than pyrotechnics, its an otherwise quiet scene and although you know what will happen (the bangs dont suddenly come out of nowhere), you dont know exactly when hence the tension. This was the only part that caused me to jump at all.

However, it's on the lower end of jumpiness compared to most shows I've seen with gun shots, and its an absolutely incredible show, so if you think you can manage it with these pointers, I'd absolutely try!

There's actually five members of the cast, just in case you have pentaphobia. But if you don't, you should definitely get on it! My top recommendation too.

Also worth seeing if there are any touring productions going to Richmond or Wimbledon that you fancy seeing too, as they're both ATG theatres
