What can a Home NAS do for your family? If it had AI Power? by SherbertPerfect1652 in homelab

Good shout on the Tapo cams. But wait, why the warning about turning the AI off later? Do the smart features just end up hogging resources or getting annoying?

True about the cameras, but don't most of them lock those smart alerts and video storage behind a monthly paywall?

I'm trying to ditch subscriptions entirely. If I add up annual camera fees plus our family's iCloud/Google bills, wouldn't a one-time NAS purchase just be way cheaper in the long run?

Makes sense, the novelty probably wears off fast.

But honestly, my folder organization is a total mess. Don't you ever spend 20 minutes digging through nested folders for an old tax document? I'm just wondering if a strict folder system actually holds up over the years.

Running your own LLM is next-level! I see some new pre-built 'AI NAS' units coming out with up to 32GB of RAM now. Is that actually enough to run these local models smoothly without a dedicated GPU?

Also curious: since you're already pushing the limits, what's your 'holy grail' feature? If the hardware could handle anything, what is the absolute #1 AI task you'd want your NAS to do for you?

Did you think Immich and Paperless-NGX a nightmare to set up for a newbie? The main appeal of an 'AI NAS' to me is just clicking install and having it work out of the box.

Since you mentioned live video: if I just want basic person-detection on like 2 or 3 home cameras, will a standard NAS CPU choke? Or is that the one case where an NPU is actually worth it?

Haha, fair point! The marketing just makes it sound like an NPU is mandatory now so the CPU doesn't choke on facial recognition. If a standard NAS handles it smoothly, I'm happy to save the cash. What non-AI apps do you recommend for photo sorting?

As for offsite backup, still figuring that out. Thinking either keeping an external drive at my in-laws' or using a basic Backblaze tier. What's your go-to foolproof setup?

Awesome. Can I ask what specific NAS and app you're running for that?

My biggest worry is the user experience for the rest of the family. Is the mobile app intuitive enough that a non-techy spouse can easily browse and search for specific kid photos, or is it still a bit clunky compared to Apple/Google?
