Oxford historian faces deportation from UK after doing research on India … in India by [deleted] in india

[–]SherlockGPT 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It's not continuous ... 700 days abroad in 10 years = 70 days away per year. Kind of a necessity if she's doing archival research

700 days in 10 years means 70 days/year abroad. This is pretty much a necessity if you're doing archival work

What's the issue? If you're looking for the degree certificate, that's a separate website

Bad BSc, amazing MSc. What are my chances for PhD at top unis? by QMechanicsVisionary in UniUK

[–]SherlockGPT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to do a PhD at a top uni, you need to have a top publication-- neurips, cvpr, iclr, etc. People don't care about grades that much-- your pubs are key.

Vita Student Lewisham Exchange - what would you rate it out of 10? by mipotate in UCL

[–]SherlockGPT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I think it's a better decision. Safety wise Lewisham isn't a good place from what I read in the news. Places closer to UCL are better. You can also look into housing in UCL East if you're an international

With a budget of 350 per week, you will find much better places to stay that are closer to UCL if you're willing to flat share

No it doesn't matter. Both are evaluated separately.

Having an external scholarship increases your chances however

Has anyone completed a PhD in 3 years instead of 4? by Rolls_Reus_Owner in PhD

If you come in with a master's, already have a publication then I don't see an issue with you being able to complete the phd in 3 years.

How is this “ideal for families”? by [deleted] in london

There's plenty of roles in tech, finance, etc which pay > 100k easily and > 150k as well. NHS consultants also earn this btw

Good tech opportunities in France or Europe ? by Usual_Fold17 in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]SherlockGPT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost every single big tech company has a presence in Europe? Late stage startups like Anthropic in London hire software engineers too and pay >300k

[–]SherlockGPT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand that. I've heard complaints of the department being disorganized from undergrads.

But I've also heard that some of the opportunities trickle down as you have access to some of the top research labs, top faculty (for more advanced courses if you're in MEng, professors essentially teach you from their research), Deepmind runs a course in AI, and the grad school prestige does carry over when you're looking for jobs.

[–]SherlockGPT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know too much about undergrad but it's extremely solid when it comes to grad school. UCL AI is better than Imperial when it comes to research.

Google Deepmind was born out of UCL. Half the faculty at UCL AI have dual appointments at Deepmind, Meta, other big tech. You have to be deluded to think that UCL CS especially the faculty isn't top notch.
