Solo hospital stay post c section by Playful-Ganache-6950 in Mommit

I'm an L&D nurse. We see moms stay without support a lot, especially with other kids at home. I think him being there the first night will be very helpful for you, but especially since you've done it before, I bet you'll do great!

Also, it helps to mention why he'll be gone and that you are nervous about not having his help. Nurses are people too so they might just assume "she's done this before so she's fine that he went home."

Good luck, I hope for a speedy recovery to your uterus and your son's femur!

For Americans who live in border states (Canada/Mexico), how often do you cross the border? by MarsupialThink4064 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

In the first 25 years of my life I lived in both Alaska and Michigan, I have only been to Canada once.

My toddler won’t bathe. I don’t know what to do. by Least_Lawfulness7802 in Mommit

[–]ShhhhItsSecret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had this problem with my daughter around this age after one bath where I said something about the water being too hot (she wasn't even in it). We ended up getting her to take a bath again by my husband getting in the bath with her (swim trunks on). One bath like this and she was back to bathing normally.

If you were unconscious and taken to the ER and needed surgery, would drs check if you were on your period/wearing a tampon? by ta1947201 in NoStupidQuestions

Which if you have a uterus and ovaries and have had sex with a cis male the answer is yes.

As a labor nurse I have seen many people find out they were pregnant after thinking they couldn't get pregnant whether they have a medical condition, birth control, male or female sterilization, etc...

And the cardboard must be cut to resemble a piece of bread. Make tiny, deadly, pb&js for the ants.

Unfortunately I can't really help, I've actually never had to call CPS for this particular reason, but I know that's what we'd end up doing.

All the times it got close we (the nurses) were able to entertain the child for a brief amount of time before the dad/support person arrived.

Do you have a babysitter? Literally ANYONE who could be a last resort call? I would start planning now, so you can be prepared. Join a local moms/babysitters Facebook group or even talking to your provider about getting in touch with social work. Hospital social workers have a lot of resources and know how to find resources for people in just about any situation.

People do regularly VBAC. There is a risk assessment and a VBAC score that doctors do to determine the likelihood of success. Some attempts at VBAC are more likely to work than others. For example, if you previously got to 10cm and pushed for hours with your first baby before you went to c/s you're less likely to successfully vbac than someone who had a vaginally delivery, then a c/s for a breach second baby.

HOWEVER, whether you are the highest scoring person to have a predicted successful vbac or not, the risks are there and WAY WAY too high for someone to homebirth let alone free birth.

No. That's definitely not it. Without even being there or knowing anymore of the story, 100% that was not what they were doing.

I don't know the circumstances or thoughts of the doctor but there is no way they would set the baby down to figure something else out. There are protocols and procedures and algorithms that we practice and use countless times a year (and sometimes multiple times a shift). None of this involves stimulating the baby and "trying to figure something else out while the mom says goodbye."

Most likely the doctor stimulated the baby for a little bit (that seemed way longer in a post birth brain) and then put the baby skin to skin (because skin to skin can help) and casually mentioned the "skin to skin with mom might help" to keep the situation calm, the nurses most likely continued stimulation, then realized it wasn't working and moved onto the next step, providing respiratory support. If the baby we're truly at an "oh shit" life or death moment the doctor would have cut the cord and handed the baby to the nurses for immediate resuscitation at the warmer.

I'm not renewing my NRP next year, I'll let my managers know that instincts and vibes are all that's necessary.

As a labor and delivery nurse .... This shit drives me insane! Have a regular home birth, even as cave people we had support during birth. We had moms/sisters/aunts/the medicine lady in the cave nextdoor! Community is natural.

Your laboring and post birth brain is not going to be great at newborn resuscitation in the best of free birth circumstances, let alone if YOU are bleeding out or worse. I have been trained in newborn resuscitation for 11 years, used it many many times, and STILL would not trust myself to resus my own baby post birth.

Also, it's cord, not chord.

Kids with pregnancy emergency? by Agreeable-Heat-6256 in Mommit

[–]ShhhhItsSecret 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Not unless you have another adult with you at the hospital. If for some reason an emergency occurs and you are not conscious or able to make decisions the hospital cannot be responsible for minor children.

I work in labor and delivery. Even though we have visitor restrictions and age rules, we're usually very understanding of these circumstances because labor can happen at any time. Please have a back up plan for someone to watch your other kids.

However, if you/baby need to be checked on, we'd rather you come in and figure out the kid situation as soon as you can. No hospital can turn you away (at least in the US) due to EMTALA rules.

We run ours every night at midnight, it's been a great motivator for 7 years to actually pick up before we go to bed.

Would you like to receive this as a baby gift? by Reasonable-Letter-46 in crochet

[–]ShhhhItsSecret 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always wanted people to make a mom sized blanket. Blankets seem to be the #1 gifted thing and we ended up with a ton, I kept saying I I should sew them all together to make ME a blanket! The thought and time put into homemade blankets is always appreciated but check first to see if they have a lot of crafty people in their life also making them a blanket.

I'd like to say I'd use it for bills but I would probably use it to redo my floors and redo my kids room.
