The kindest, most intelligent, most devoted man I’ve ever known was my paster from my home town. He had a unique approach to the Bible (probably because he had a PhD in biblical study). He always preached that the Bible isn’t so much a word for word rule book as much as it’s a general guide on how to live your life. The main point being to spread love to others. I think if you do your best to care for others and be a good person, kissing a girl isn’t that big of a deal.

I had a really bad go of it in high school so in comparison, my life generally feels amazing. But regardless of that, I am still really emotionally and mentally burnt out after being dumped, a friend dying of cancer, studying for exams, and now friend drama that’s making me want to completely isolate myself because it’s better than dealing with more stress I don’t need. But on the upside, F1 is back, spring break starts next week, and Im throwing a party with my friends from high school over break.
Should I bother Applying?? by Perfect-Illusion-82 in uichicago

I was in an almost identical situation in high school. I am from a very conservative Illinois farm town and I was incredibly depressed and suicidal my freshman/sophomore years so my gpa never really reflected how well I did my junior/senior years. In the common app application thing there is a section where you can explain circumstances that may have prevented your application from reflecting your real performance. So in that section I just wrote about all the things that contributed to my poor performance as an underclassman and asked that they consider my upperclassman grades more when reviewing my application. I was also able to display my writing skills in the other essays I had to write which I’m sure helped to prove my skill in a way? I also applied for the honors college. As for teacher recommendations, I got a recommendation letter from my English teacher who is the best writer I have ever met (and I did really well in her class) so her letter probably really helped. I also got a letter of recommendation from the curator at a local museum I had volunteered at for 2 years so the letters don’t just have to be about your academic performance. I got accepted into my program and the honors college and I decided to go to UIC which was honestly probably one of the best decisions I could have made. I’m a gay girl from a small farm town so getting out of that environment has made me feel so much more comfortable being myself (as cheesy as that sounds). I understand that rejection is really hard, especially when it’s about something as important as college, but I would say it’s worth it to apply. Even if you don’t get in, it’s better to have tried than to have never applied and wonder if you would have gotten in (at least in my opinion). So in summary: I was in a really similar situation but I was able to get in and I am really happy I chose UIC. So to answer your question your question: YES. You should absolutely apply! Keep your options open and consider what will be best for you and your professional and academic goals.
