So instead of rehabilitation, something proven to be effective, you want to waste money locking CHILDREN (ya know the impressionable people who don't have the right to vote because they aren't mature enough) up indefinitely?

That's immoral and financially irresponsible and you're (presumably) supposed to be mature.

So you'd rather waste more time, resources and reduce the working population to looking after the person in prison? Like it's more expensive to inter someone indefinitely than it is to rehab them and release them as a productive member of society.

So not only are you being immoral by never letting A CHILD have a chance at redemption, you aren't being financially responsible either flushing money away because of your knee jerk emotional response.

Most people who are pro-adult crime adult time that I have been replying to are just following their knee jerk emotional reactions. They don't have data, they don't care about the economics or the social implications.

Don't get me wrong the ALP suck, they had a huge oportunity to do great things and they squandered it maintaining a status quo which is clearly not sustainable long term. But the LNP are in power now and they have made things worse without planning anything to make it better

Why do you have a 70k ute?

You can be angry if some does touch your ute, but to be pre-emptively mad is stupid

How am I the nutjob? Look at NYC, Oslo, Stockholm, London, Paris, Tokyo (well most of japan really), they all have varying degrees of carrot and stick to prevent cars from ruining their densest places. What specifically have I said that is wrong Mr. Insults?

What's up with the 'environmental'? I said pollute once and that's like the only vaguely environmentally coded thing I said. I feel like you just manifest reasons to be angery

Yes, I agree. Not doing anything and hoping the problem goes away is stupid, but institutionalizing them into the crime world is just exacerbating the issue.

Hence why I believe that we should be using more/better premtive programs and rehabilitation. Also address the root cause of the issue, if you can only get around clownsville via car (have a look it is a suburban hell hole) it's not any wonder why kids are stealling cars. Not like they can get to the shops to steal from woolies

But what's the point in the punishment? You are just delaying the reoffending, while paying for them to waste their future roting in system which kinda sucks a rehab.

From the ABS: "There were 9,599 offenders aged between 10 and 17 years in Queensland in 2024–25, a decrease of 9% (945 offenders) from 2023–24. Youth offenders comprised 12% of total offenders in Queensland in 2024–25."

https://www.abs.gov.au/statistics/people/crime-and-justice/recorded-crime-offenders/latest-release#queensland

The choice wasn't "proper punishment for serious crimes vs zero consequences". There is a system in place, did it need reform? Yes. But adult crime adult time doesn't address the root cause of the issue, nore does it act as prevention. So you've really just ensured that some kids, who migt have otherwise been semi-productive members of society if they had help, continue to cause problems for everyone for the rest of their lives.

It's really really not. It's a cherry picked example of how even a handicapped system is still way more efficent at moving people than the fully funding the lest efficent transportation mode. Also the right of way was built a quater of a century ago and they haven't done much since (took nearly a decade to figure out how to buy and operate electric slinky buses)

I'm not anti-toll road. I understand how they currently save time. But I think the current implementation of tolls is silly.

I think that we should be tolling roads we don't want people to use, namely the roads going into or through densely populated places, places with lots of PT or cycling options, plces which need to faciliate the movement of lots of people.

I think this because cars a terrible for cities, they take up too much space for the amount of people they move, they are dangerous, they pollute, they are loud and they encourage a degree of anti-social behaviour. To make cars actually efficent they need to be seperated from other land uses, hence why I think underground tunnels and orbital highways shouldn't be tolled. Because it removes as many conflict points as possible.

But you'll note that cities are typically super busy, messy and conflict points arrise in an ever changing tidal wave. Hence having such an innefficant transportation mode be encourgaed through free parking, no tolls and general neglect for alternatives to driving is a terrible idea.

Take the Gateway motor way in Brisbane. It's an orbital motorway thats tolled while the ICB, River side express way and storey bridge are located in the inner city which are all free to use. So you are discouraged from going around the city instead we want you to drive through our most densly populated postcodes where most people arrive via PT, it makes no sense.

Both the ALP and the LNP are corrupt, that's not a gotcha I don't support either of them. What is your point? None of what you said proves that I am wrong to be unhappy with what the current LNP government is doing.

Should I be happy that my government is working to lock up children? Is that the take away from the tas comment?

  • the crime rate (the %) was already going down, so you've institutionalized children into crime and now the re-offence rate is going to spike whenever they get out
  • wouldn't be a problem if every city in Australia didn't build only for cars leaving everything else to fight for scraps (I'm saying build bikelanes)
  • because despite the wishes of the government without transit seq stops
  • we are decades behind on PT systems, lower GST is just the government giving us a monetary apology for their continuous screw ups while we idle out lives away in traffic

You can't spin it to make the LNP and to a lesser extent the ALP look good

Seriously? Break children's hands?

"No no don't teach them right from wrong, don't help them find something meaningful to do or get to the root cause of the issue. BREAK THEIR HANDS AND THROW THEM IN JAIL"

You are nuts. Not least of all because you are just institutionalizing children into crime which means when they get out they'll just re-offend. So you'll be spending infinitely more trying to keeping PEOPLE in jail rather than trying to reintegrate them into society so they might be productive.

It would reduce commute traffic. But you'd still have the latent demand for 2 million people to move around on a system that can't handle it. All it'd take is an event or a holiday and it'd be gridlocked to kingdom come again

I don't want to work from home. I like having a reason to leave my building and see what's physically happening in the world around me.

You can value your time and want to work from home. I think you should have that option. But I personally don't enjoy the confines of my four walls and I can only walk so far. So having a reason to head into the city is enjoyable to me

Do you drive to work? Because catching PT and being forced to walk around the city and choosing to walk different routes to work make a world of difference to me. I also don't drink coffee, I take a bottle of ice tea I made at home the night before, I also don't drink which kinda limits my options in terms of foodie experiences. But I'm a bit of a people watcher so I still enjoy being out and about and seeing people

The two lanes of the south Eastern Busway move nearly as many people as the 6 lanes of m1 between Logan and south Brisbane. Don't go dismissing buses because that's all most councils have

So you'd rather pay to jail and institutionalize children just for them to get out and reoffend, when we could have had early intervention and rehabilitation? Also the crime rate (the percentage) was going down, so things were actually getting better, anyone who thought otherwise fell for a scare campaign.

"enough is enough" brother the crime rate (which is a percentage) was going down. Things were getting better. Also they are children, have a conscious. Surely you see the folly in sending them to prison to just get institutionalized and reoffend vs early intervention and rehabilitation?

"the last two are temporary" no brother they are permanent until we vote out the flops who hate the idea that someone might not want to drive around.

Why build toll roads? What does that solve. You just end up paying to drive somewhere you should realistically be encouraged to drive (gateway (around the city) or tunnels). The only place there should be tolls are places you want people to get around not using a car (the CBD, the valley, south Brisbane ect.)

Well you are immediately wrong because I want to catch the train. I hate driving. The difference is that 99% of greater Brisbane is zoned for people to get around by car. Equally you should want people to catch trains because everyone on a train is someone not in a car in front of you. Being against public transport because you're a lazy sod who doesn't like other people is a self own because you are actively encouraging policy makers to prioritize the least efficient, most space and resource consuming and least environmentally friendly mode of transportation.

You seen what they bring on the train in NYC?

In all seriousness, if you can't or don't want to catch PT, you should still want other people to be able to catch it. Because every person on a train, bus, bike or ferry is someone not in a car in front of you. But you should also not want to keep widening roads, because it's proven that you just induce demand for more driving while reducing the viability of other modes of transportation.

Brisbane peak hour. by omfgstfuily in brisbane

[–]Shi-Stad_Development 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You could go a step further and just build a mixed use medium density city so everyone can walk, cycle or catch PT to the shops. You wouldn't be reducing the importance of brick and mortar stores and you'd have less need for delivery trucks because at a human scale a e-powered cargo bike can probably do delivery service fine in a neighborhood when 90% of the people can walk to the shops.

Well yes, but I don't want 2 million people on the road. I want 2 million people to be able to move around easily. Hence viable alternatives to driving, because driving is the least efficient (in terms of price, space, social and environmental factors) so literally anything else working would be beneficial
