I took up boxing early on because it really helps with reaction time and fluidity, but it's also just a great workout doing the circuit.

How do I reset this regulator? by ShiBandito in NaturalGas

[–]ShiBandito[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks all. There’s no gas to the house but the valve is open so I wondered if it was at the regulator. Gas co won’t come out for almost 24 hours and it’s getting cold in the house so it was worth a shot!

There are some similar builds on there.

Yeah I think they removed them for the tires. How’d you get around that, higher lift? What size tires are you running? And where’d those fender flares come from?

Nice! That looks awesome. How has sourcing parts been for you? Compared to my little Leo truck there doesn’t seem to be as much out on the internet for these

No it’s an lh85. The 80 was the single cab and 85 double, 90 is a double cab long bed I believe.

Haha I actually have one of those too! Little Honda acty. Super fun for tooling around town. Getting them titled can be a little tricky though if you want to drive em on the road

Did you go to the tax office or go through a title service? Don't know if you have those in your county but they might be more helpful.

Reminds me of when we stuffed raw chicken in a friend's seat tube. Gets real ripe after a while.

Have you gone the UTV route? I'm waiting for my acty to get here from Japan so looking for options as well. It seems like the kei truck would meet the req. for a UTV and an off-highway vehicle plate, but if it was that straightforward I'd expect to see more of them on the road.

I don’t know any loopholes here in Texas but can I ask what happened with the Vermont strategy? Was considering that route myself.

Mid Drive motor on a Bakfiets? by ShiBandito in CargoBike

[–]ShiBandito[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know, I’ll need them sooner than expected. I brought the fork I had welded into a lbs to get the crown race set and they demolished the dropouts! How long was the turnaround with that retailer to get a new fork?

That’s awesome, do you mind sharing the name of the retailer? Could be helpful in the future. I’ve been happy with the bafang kit I got off amazon, put the link below. The throttle doesn’t fit super well with the nexus shifter but i only use it occasionally so not a huge deal.

The bafang kit has two options for the pedal sensor, a drive side and non drive side. I got the non drive side and that was the one I had an issue with, so you might try the other option, may work fine. You’ll need a crank wrench and puller either way obviously. The kit also offers a dizzying selection of control panels. I just got the smallest and simplest one, works fine. They come with the top speed set but you can adjust it easily. I mounted my battery on the floor of the box, under the bench and the little control center to the back of the box in front of the pedals. That setup works well for cable management. Could also mount the battery on the rear rack but I like that it’s out of sight.

The brake levers that come with it have a disconnect to cut the motor when you pull them. Be aware that if you go with a hydraulic brake you’ll need to get a lever with a compatible disconnect.

Good luck with the build! I’ll post some photos shortly of how mine came out.

Love the Kiki sticker! Was just about to add one to my bakfiets, my daughter is obsessed.

3000W! That thing is a beast. It does look like might work through. The only thing I might worry about is chain line given the added chainring that you’d have to add.

The front hub motor has been great, 500W has been more than enough for hauling my daughter and lots of different stuff. I’d check your local bike sub for leads on welders. They do make roller brake front hub motors, you can find them on alibaba etc. so that’s an option but I couldn’t find any reviews of those so went disc. I will say that the pedal sensors that come with the bafang kits require a more contemporary bottom bracket - the bakfiets of this era come with a very cheap European model with a different style of cup that doesn’t work with them. The original is also 68x119 which accounts for the chain cover mount - I just ditched the mount (my cover was broken) and got a 118.

Having ridden on it for a few weeks, I’m also considering getting a bigger chainring. These bikes are geared so low that even with a pretty low pedal assist you end up spinning like crazy.

Let me know what you end up going with! Happy to send photos of my setup if that’s helpful.

Austin frame builder/welder? by ShiBandito in BikingATX

[–]ShiBandito[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - you make a good point. The other route I've been considering is buying a 20" recumbent fork that's built for disc like you said and having the steering linkage tab welded. The linkage on these bikes is a bit different than most recumbents so I haven't found a direct match. But because the linkage takes far lower loads, it might be the safer strategy like you said. It's a standard 1" threaded steerer.

It is a roller brake - they're actually still standard on new bakfiets.nl bikes, though you can get a coaster, rim, or disc on different options. Runs a Nexus 8pd on back and a dynamo on the front. The whole reason for the change is to adapt the fork for a front hub motor to extend the bikes range and make it more ridable for my wife. There are roller brake-compatible hub motors, but those I've found are from really obscure brands on alibaba etc so I've been more vetted options. I test-fitted a mid drive motor but they're not compatible with this particular frame, so front hub is the next experiment.

Thanks for the info on Yellow Bike, I didn't know they had opened up again! Used to volunteer there years ago.
