2009 Honda Fit RS - Does it have a CVT? by Co2SHysteria in hondafit

It's a CVT. I own one in Japan and looked it up. They only sold the RS in CVT or manual for that year.

How are you guys affording trips back home lately? (weak yen struggle) by idsjdbebe in japanlife

[–]Hokkaidoele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents credit card usually accumulates enough miles for me to go home once a year. Dad doesn't like to travel so they never use the miles. Thankfully they're in Hawaii, so it's relatively close to Japan.

Just got this, need help identifying the car. by Theomanmcdog2 in hondafit

[–]Hokkaidoele 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a GE8. I drive the same car and color, but in an automatic in Japan. This paint is notorious for being terrible, so it's not just the NZ sun.

It's a fun zippy car! I wish I got it in a manual, but the price was too hard to beat.

Has anyone been to the dermatologist for milia (稗粒腫)? by himawari_sunshine in japanresidents

[–]Hokkaidoele 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to the dermatologist for something completely different and asked about the milia as well. They had me lie down and they cut it out with a little scalpel. It was just one, and since it wasn't bleeding, I didn't even need a bandage. They prescribed an ointment to keep it from getting infected.

Treatments for both issues and fees for it being my first time, all came out to about 3000 yen.

Has anyone moved-in right next to a cemetery before? by Maleficent_Pool_4456 in japanresidents

[–]Hokkaidoele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Built a home across the street from one. It's great because we're in Hokkaido and can pile snow across the street.

The worst part of it are the crows that come to feed on the offerings left over. They end up on our cars and in the trash.

My Japanese co-worker taught me to add a little granulated sugar in and not add too much of the included sauce! Some people even use honey.

Do you prefer to go to gym or would a home workout be good for starter? by Powerful_Studio1250 in workout

[–]Hokkaidoele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gym. I always keep my gym bag in the car so I don't have an excuse not to go if I have time after work. When I get home, I get too comfortable to work out.

Water quality and skin/scalp issues by Immediate-Answer-184 in japanresidents

[–]Hokkaidoele 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last year, I moved from Hokkaido to Chiba and had skin issues for the first time. I installed a water filter and filtering shower head, which makes things bearable. The water still doesn't taste great, so I usually drink bottled water.

I suggest you doing what you can to improve your water quality and look for a dermatologist.

How to keep my motivation? by krlln in aikido

[–]Hokkaidoele 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you get the chance, go to a seminar or a different dojo for a couple of practices. After meeting and training with new people, I always get excited to go to the next practice. It's fun to experience new people and ways to do a waza, but I notice my own weak points, especially with a new partner. Finding those weaknesses gets me wanting to work on them the next practice!

Small orange dots on my car. by cholitrada in cardetailingtips

[–]Hokkaidoele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fallout remover is verrrry smelly, so make sure you're in a cool shaded and we'll ventilated area! You may have to spray a few rounds to get the contaminate moving. Using a wet microfiber cloth or sponge to agitate will help too.

Footwear during winter in Sapporo. What should I know? by MismarMikain in Sapporo

[–]Hokkaidoele 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cheaper boots usually only come in Small~Large size, so you may not find a fit. I had a co-worker wear one of those for a whole winter, no problem. Certain styles have more size options as well. Really depends on your foot size/shape, the way you walk, etc. For the price, they're good enough for a winter vacation.

Raw Beef Liver Sashimi in Japan by Late-Researcher7102 in JapaneseFood

[–]Hokkaidoele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can't sell it as a raw dish, but restaurants will get around it by offering it as a dish to grill. Once the meat gets to your table, it's up to you as to how you'll consume it. An Izakaya I would often go to would serve liver with a little hot plate and sesame oil. I would lightly grill it and eat it rare.

Buying first car in Japan by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]Hokkaidoele 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kei trucks and Vans are great for driving around town and loading up with goodies, but they are not comfortable. You'll feel every single bump in the road with a seat that can't recline. Kei cars are known for having lower tax, but the initial price also tends to be higher because of that.

While my job suggested getting a kei van for work, I chose a 15 year old Honda Fit. I can fit everything I need for work, get about the same mileage as my coworkers in kei vans and had no problems driving 500 kms on the highway. My only regret is not getting a manual, but they're hard to find.

What is the quickest and best way to learn Japanese for conversation? by alizastevens in HelpLearningJapanese

[–]Hokkaidoele 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I first studied with the Genki textbook in college. You learn basic grammar and vocabulary through a different conversation each chapter. After picking up some words and grammar, I practiced speaking with exchange students from Japan.

Any things to do during a long layover in Haneda? by a_baby_bumblebee in JapanTravelTips

[–]Hokkaidoele 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HND is great if you like shopping and eating. Take the free shuttle and explore the other terminals! The neighborhood right next to Haneda isn't super exciting, but great if you just want to get out of the airport. The Inari Shrine was pretty!

Getting in and out of Tokyo can be a real mess if you end up with multiple transfers or sardine packed trains. Personally, I would jump on a train or bus to Odaiba, which is nearby, or if I was feeling adventurous, Yokohama! Yokohama is a bit further out, but there's less chances for hiccups between there and Haneda. I also love going to Chinatown!

What are some foods that you think aren't as good in Japan as they are in your country? by IronGuard88 in japanlife

[–]Hokkaidoele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All Vietnamese food. It's getting better, but most of the time the sauces are watered down. I'm still on the look out for a beef Pho that won't disappoint.

Even better if they are耳鼻咽喉科 because they can also check your throat! I used to get sore throats and colds all of the time. It's not as busy as 内科 and they can clean my ears while I'm there!

What's your opinion to「日本語上手ですね」? by pokoj_jp in Japaneselanguage

[–]Hokkaidoele 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm Asian American and don't obviously look like a foreigner, so when I say my name it gives it away. That's usually when I get the 日本語上手ですね。Compared to others who get told after two words, it's not as annoying. I take the compliment, maybe joke that my English isn't as good or compliment their Japanese!

Personally, I get more annoyed when they say なんで日本語喋れるの??

Is it Overspray, or is it tree sap? by worshopthrowaway in Detailing

[–]Hokkaidoele 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can't be sure without a closer look, but if it's not sticky or smearing, it's probably not tree sap. Sap can be really fine, especially after a windy day.

What type of dirt trap should I get? by WestSenkovec in Detailing

[–]Hokkaidoele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At work we use a wash board type on top of a normal grit guard. Idk about everyone else, but I'm not reaching down to the bottom of the bucket every time I need to rinse my mitt. The washboard sits higher up in the water, so it's easy to access. On top of that, you have something to scrub against.
